Kent State University has informed its university community that the second healthcare worker diagnosed with Ebola, a nurse who helped care for Thomas Eric Duncan, is related to three Kent State employees. The patient was not showing any symptoms of the disease when she traveled to Cleveland, Ohio, on Friday, Oct. 10, and returned to Dallas, Texas, on Monday, Oct. 13. In Dallas, the patient detected a low-grade fever on Tuesday, Oct. 14, and entered a Dallas hospital for isolation and treatment. The patient was tested for Ebola, and results on Wednesday, Oct.

As David Barnes’ senior year was drawing to a close, the 2009 graduate of Champion High School was intensely focused on his next educational move.

With full-ride scholarship offers on the table from Cleveland State University and the University of South Florida, it seemed that a move out of the area would be a foregone conclusion. Ever the pragmatist, Barnes approached the decision in much the same fashion as his future career would dictate - matter-of-factly.

A group of nearly 200 Kent State University at Trumbull students were honored as scholarship recipients at a reception held on Friday, Oct. 3.

More than $198,000 from 49 campus-based scholarships was awarded, along with additional awards from numerous externally-based scholarships.

The United Way of Trumbull County will stage the Fourth Annual Great Pumpkin 5K Run/Walk on the campus of Kent State University at Trumbull on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 5:30 p.m.

Race day registration and packet pick-up will take place between 4-5:15 p.m.

The run/walk will start and finish at the Kent State Trumbull Technology Building, and will follow an out-and-back course down Educational Highway to Champion Street and back again.

Entry fee is $20. Great Pumpkin 5K T-shirts are guaranteed to the first 150 preregistered entrants.

In recognition of October being Domestic Violence Awareness month, a number of events will occur on the campus of Kent State University at Trumbull.

On Thursday, Oct. 9, Linda Baer, R.A., and legal advocate supervisor of Someplace Safe, Inc., will speak on domestic violence in the 21st century, prevention efforts, and the work of the agency in the community. Baer's presentation will take place in Room 173 of the Link Building, from 3-4 p.m.

The Warren Kiwanis Club will host the 36th Annual Turkey Trot, a 5-mile run and 2-mile fun run/walk, on Thursday, Nov. 27 on the campus of Kent State University at Trumbull.

The 2-mile fun run/walk will begin at 9 a.m., with the 5-mile run set to start at 10 a.m. 

Early registration, at $20 per entrant, can be done online at www.gopherarun.com, while race day registration will cost $25.
