Porthouse Closes 2015 Season with "Hairspray"

Hit musical will leave audiences dancing in their seats

You won't be able to stop the beat at Porthouse this July when "Hairspray" dances across the stage.

Directed by producing artistic director Terri Kent, “Hairspray” opens July 31 and runs through August 16. A preview performance will take place on July 30. This family-friendly musical will have audiences dancing in their seats. “Hairspray” follows plus-size teen Tracy Turnblad as she fights for her dream to dance on the Corny Collins Show and ends up revolutionizing 1960s Baltimore. Book is by Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan, music is by Marc Shaiman, and lyrics are by Scott Wittman. Performances are July 30 and 31 and Aug. 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15 at 8pm and Aug. 2, 9, 15, and 16 at 2pm.

Professor Emeritus Chuck Richie* performs as Edna Turnblad accompanied by Rohn Thomas* as Wilbur Turnblad and Colleen Longshaw* (MFA ’15) as Motormouth Maybelle. Scenic design is by Nolan O’Dell (BFA ’98), costume design by Sarah Russell (MFA ’09), lighting design by T. C. Kouyeas, Jr. (MFA ’06), technical direction by Ryan T. Patterson, and sound design by Brian Chismar (BFA ’13). Choreographer is College of the Arts dean and professor John R. Crawford and production stage manager is Kristen Boehnlein*.

Plus-size teen Tracy Turnblad and her hometown of Baltimore are welcoming the 60s in the dance-filled musical Hairspray. In this new era full of bouffant hair and great fashion, Tracy is determined to achieve her dream of dancing on the Corny Collins Show. Her quest to be the newest dancer turns Tracy into a star and a social activist as she advocates for racial integration on the show, tries to dethrone the reigning Miss Teenage Hairspray, and looks for love with teen heartthrob Link Larkin. Hairspray, winner of 8 Tony Awards, is a family friendly treat.
