Communication Studies Student Interns with the School of Visual Communication Design

Kara Taylor, a senior applied communication major, is interning with the School of Visual Communication Design this spring. As one of their marketing interns, Taylor is responsible for covering VCD events and writing content for the school’s social media platforms, alumni magazine and alumni website.

“I get to do a wide-range of things at work,” Taylor said. “I really enjoy working in the Art Building, too. It’s a great atmosphere to be in.”

Before working with VDC, Taylor worked as a reporting intern for the Record Courier, Portage County’s newspaper and the Chautauqua Institution, a non-profit adult education center.

“My communication classes have definitely helped me succeed in all of my internships,” Taylor said. “From public speaking to group projects, it all has given me great skills. I also love how as an applied communication major, I have the freedom and flexibility to take JMC and VCD classes that interest me.”

When looking for your next internship, Taylor suggests to get your resume ready and to market yourself in the best way possible. She also says to make sure to keep an open mind.

“You may not like every internship, but always take something with you onto the next stage in your career,” Taylor said.

After graduating this May, Taylor plans to move to New York City and start her career in writing and eventually attend graduate school. In the long run, her dream job is to write for a large magazine like Cosmopolitan or Essence. Make sure to keep an eye out for her pieces in Cosmo one day!
