JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR/Show #1

Jesus: Tenor (A2-G5), male-identifying.
Must be an excellent singer and actor. He is the leader of the twelve Apostles; exudes peace, proclaims peace, lives peace, but is otherwise a rather human “son of God,” since he has human doubts. Jesus displays human emotion on several occasions, irritation at his apostles for their unceasing demands on him, anger at the merchants and moneylenders in the temple and genuine fear and doubt just before his execution. The spell he casts over his followers comes partly from his pure simplicity and partly from their desire to adore him and make him the object of their piety; they seem to miss his point that devotion is due to God, not to him.

Judas Iscariot: Tenor (D3-D5), male-identifying.
One of the twelve apostles of Jesus; concerned for the poor and for the consequences of Jesus' fame; ends up being a conflicted man, and a powerfully passionate character. Must be an excellent singer and actor.

Mary Magdalene: Alto (F3-E♭5),  female-identifying.
The follower of Jesus who finds herself conflicted with emotions about his journey. Must be an actor of great strength and good singer.

Pontius Pilate: Baritone (A2-B4), male-identifying.
Governor of Judea who foresees the events of Jesus’ crucifixion from beginning to aftermath in a dream and finds himself being presented with that very situation. This character is one of the most conflicted in the play and must have a strong presence and good singing voice.

Caiaphas: Bass (C2-F4), male-identifying.
The high priest of Jerusalem who, according to Biblical accounts, sent Jesus to Pilate. Must have a deep low bass voice.

Annas: Tenor (G2-D5), male-identifying.
Fellow priest at the side of Caiaphas who is persuaded by Caiaphas into seeing Jesus as a threat. Must be a high tenor or countertenor and great actor.

Peter: Baritone (G2-G4), male-identifying.
One of Jesus' 12 apostles; denies Jesus three times upon the night of Jesus' arrest to save himself. Tenor or baritenor.

Simon Zealotes: Tenor (G3-B4), male-identifying.
One of Jesus' 12 apostles; urges Jesus to lead his followers into battle against the Romans. High energy actor.

King Herod: Baritone, male-identifying.
The King of Galilee; Jesus is brought to him for judgment after first being taken to Pilate. Must be an excellent character actor.

Ensemble: Male-identifying.
Must be excellent singers and dancers. They make up the additional 12 apostles and crowd ensemble.

Ensemble: Female-identifying.
Must be excellent singers and dancers for the crowd and title numbers.

Swings: Male and female-identifying to cover ensemble.
