On Friday, Jan. 31, One Golf Three President Steve Schafer presented CAE Dean Christina Bloebaum with a check for $18,000, the proceeds from the 2019 One Golf Three golf tournament. As in past years, the proceeds from the outing go to the Richard F. Schwabe Scholarship. This year’s scholarship recipients were Mason Lloyd, Nicholas Malachowski and Olivia Semon. Over winter break, members and advisors of the Kent State University Honors Leadership Academy traveled to Washington, D.C. for an Alternative Winter Break experience, focusing on hunger and homelessness in the nation’s capital. Rachael Lang, Whiteaker Middle School eighth-grader, was one of the three winners of the national Call for Poems about Peace and Conflict Resolution contest at Kent State’s Wick Poetry Center to commemorate the 50th anniversary of May 4, 1970. The three winners were selected by judge Naomi Shihab Nye from more than 600 entries of poems about peace and conflict transformation. Lang told the Salem Reporter her poem “Consequences” was inspired both by the Kent State massacre and other acts of injustice perpetrated under the guise of the law. Kent State molecular and cellular biology and psychology student Haley Shasteen’s personal battle with lupus has pushed her to research what really causes certain frustrating symptoms. Shasteen participated in the 2018 Summer Undergraduate Research Experience, taking first place for her research project, “Cognitive Impairments of those with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus.” Her research focused on ‘brain fog,’ the feeling of cognitive impairment that many people with lupus deal with, herself included. “I know what it feels like to have brain fog,” Shasteen said. “The more reading I do about thi...
