    Biography

    Satyendra Kumar is Professor Emeritus of Physics at Kent State University, where he spent nearly three decades as a leading figure in soft condensed matter physics and liquid crystal science, and is globally recognized for his contributions to the understanding of liquid crystal structure, phase transitions, and device technology.

    Dr. Kumar joined Kent State in 1987 as an Assistant Professor of Physics, following postdoctoral research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and industrial experience as a Senior Physicist at Tektronix, where he contributed to the development of high-resolution liquid crystal projection light valves. He rose through the ranks to become Associate Professor in 1991 and Professor of Physics in 1997, and served as Associate Vice President for Research at Kent State from 2009 to 2013, and earlier as Physics Graduate Coordinator.

    His research career at Kent State was marked by several landmark contributions to physics. His group’s most notable work includes the study of critical phenomena in thermotropic calamitic and biaxial nematic phase in bent-core mesogens, pioneering work on de Vries smectic phases, including direct observation of diffuse cone behavior published in Physical Review Letters in 2011, reshaped the scientific understanding of molecular organization in these technologically important materials. His early work decisively resolved a longstanding controversy by demonstrating the nonexistence of incommensurate smectic-A phases in binary liquid crystal mixtures. He also made lasting contributions to liquid crystal display technology through the polymer dispersed ferroelectric LC displays, phase-separated composite films (PSCOF) - an approach described in Science in 1999 that formed the basis for flexible plastic displays, and to studies of liquid crystal alignment on solid substrates, including demonstrating the decisive role of surface roughness anisotropy in Physical Review Letters in 2005.

    Over his career at Kent State, Dr. Kumar published nearly 230 papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals, authored and edited two books—including Liquid Crystals: Experimental Study of Physical Properties and Phase Transitions (Cambridge University Press, 2000)—and is named inventor on 14 U.S. and international patents, primarily in liquid crystal devices and display technology. He secured more than $15 million in extramural funding at Kent State, with support from the National Science Foundation, Department of Energy, NASA, Samsung Electronics, and other agencies and industry partners. He directed 14 doctoral dissertations and master's theses. His advisee Dr. Andrew Primak won the 2002 Glenn Brown Prize of the International Liquid Crystal Society for outstanding dissertation research. He mentored 21 postdoctoral scholars, many of whom went on to prominent careers in academia, national labs, and industry. He consulted for twelve companies, including Pfizer, Samsung, 3M, Ajinomoto, and Unilever, bridging fundamental science and practical application.

    Dr. Kumar's service to the scientific community included election as President of the International Liquid Crystal Society (2004–2008), representing approximately 900 members from 40 countries. During his tenure he secured endowments from LG Display and Samsung for the Society's two first-ever Mid-Career awards. From 2005 to 2008, he served as a Program Director in the Division of Materials Research at the National Science Foundation, managing a ~$10 M annual portfolio in condensed matter physics and biomaterials and receiving the NSF Director's Award for Program Merit Review Excellence. He chaired the 16th International Liquid Crystal Conference held at Kent State in 1996. He was a founding member of teams that secured over $7 million for undulator and bending magnet beamlines at Argonne National Laboratory's Advanced Photon Source and $1.8 million for a beamline at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). Among his other honors are the Distinguished Scholar Award from Kent State University (2007), the ACESS Distinguished Award of Council from the Akron Council of Engineering and Scientific Societies (2013), and the "Best Basic Research Leading to Applications" Award from the Ministry of Science and Technology of South Korea (2001).

    Since his retirement from Kent State in 2016, Dr. Kumar is serving as Associate Vice President for Research, Professor of Physics, and Director of the Ion Beam Laboratory at the University at Albany, SUNY. In addition to mentoring UAlbany faculty in their research and pursuit of extramural funding, he continues his research at the frontiers of the field, including first-ever measurements of propagating phonon modes and phonon bandgaps in soft matter using inelastic x-ray scattering at the National Synchrotron Light Source-II at BNL.
