Sciences Renovation

Work in progress:

  • Completed AHU #3 duct tie-in to AHU #2.
  • Air handler unit #3 has been permanently shutdown.
  • Start layout for tele/data ductbanks.
  • Starting motor control center (MCC) and swithgear duct bank.
  • Started mass excavation - currently 95% complete.  Shoring and lagging is now complete.
  • Installing exterior scaffolding to 3rd floor on the west side of the building inside the construction fence.
  • Phoenix air valve replacement in the Annex research labs continues per schedule.

Work in progress:

  • Site shoring around the building is complete - contractor is demobilizing.
  • 130 Piles are complete on the north end of the site (approximately to column line 7).
  • Temporary ramp into excavation is complete.
  • Sanitary tie-in on the north side has been completed.
  • Pile caps and grade breams have begun.
  • Mass excavation is complete.

Looking ahead:

Work in Progress:

  • Continuing the installation of the temporary duct and assembly of new AHU1 in the East side mechanical room.
  • Stripped topsoil from addition footprint.
  • Phoenix air valve replacement in the Annex research labs continues per schedule.
  • Continue coordination of the west mechanical room abatement and planning for demolition of AHU 3.
  • Excavated existing 10" water main that will be relocated for addition.
  • Fabricating duct for cross connect of AHU 2 & AHU 3.

Work in Progress:

  • Floor electrical boxes in room 101 & 104 are complete.
  • Plumbing under slab is complete in 101 & 104.
  • The sanitary tie-in and under slab rough-in is complete and inspected for the new restrooms in addition.
  • Electrical raceways have been installed in crawlspace.
  • Completed miscellaneous demolition the 2nd floor. 
  • Abatement work is substantially complete in the building.

Looking ahead:

  • CMU walls to begin student machine shop & receiving on 2/5.

Work in progress:

  • Air handler assembly of unit 1 continues in 3rd floor mechanical room east with Roth and Air Enterprises.
  • Abatement coordination and containment underway in the 3rd floor mechanical room west to prepare to demolish AHU #3 serving the vivarium.
  • AHU #3 planned shutdown on 1/29/16 after 5:15pm.
  • Removed approximately 80% of the curtain wall on the south side.
  • Demolition of exterior stair started on 1/28/2016.
  • Phoenix air valve replacement in the Annex research labs continues per schedule.

Work in progress:

  • Demolition of south stairs is complete including the foundations.
  • Test pile will be tested on 1/29/16.
  • Steam Condensate receiver in Williams Hall will take place on Saturday with UFM shutdown.
  • Auger Cast pile installation to begin next week and progress south to column line 6 by end of week.
  • Shoring is about 80% complete.  Working on east side.
  • Mass excavation continues on the South end.

Work in progress:

  • Electric rough-in is in progress in rooms 101 and 104. Floor box rough-in is complete.
  • Completing the under-slab plumbing tie-ins in 101 and 104.
  • Electrical raceways are being installed the crawl space.
  • New first floor restroom under-slab sanitary piping is approximately 75% complete.
  • Demolition of the receiving area and machine shop partitions are approximately 75% complete.
  • Temporary wall and door installation will be completed 1/28/16.

Current Work Progress:

  • Currently abating 3rd floor west mechanical room.
  • Currently coordinating duct tie in from unit 4 to unit 1 & unit 3 tie into unit 2. There will be short supply air outages when sheet metal cross connections occur. Notices will be sent prior to outages.
  • Precision finishing abatement on first floor tile and second floor ceiling tiles during 3rd shift tonight (1/21).
  • Overhead door on east side mechanical room will be installed tomorrow.

The groundbreaking for Kent State University’s new Integrated Sciences Building was held Oct. 2 from 2-5 p.m. The event was free and open to the public. Following the groundbreaking, Kent State’s College of Arts and Sciences hosted a showcase of science and technology demonstrations, along with refreshments, music and fun, on the Student Green. Kent State President Beverly Warren and James Blank, Ph.D., dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Kent State, spoke at the event.

Work in Progress:

  • Forming at stair #3 for 3rd lift continues; 2nd lift pour has been completed.
  • Concrete piers along column line 'B' were completed.
  • Steel erection in sequence 1 - 4 continues.
  • Steel detailing in sequence 2 continues.
  • Basement retaining wall between column line 17/A.1 to 17/C in progress.
  • Steam, steam condensate and chilled water piping work in tunnel is in progress.
  • Removal of temporary overhead protection at Williams Hall dock area.
