Flag Raising and Color Guard
Presented by Army ROTC and Air Force ROTC
Dr. N.J. Akbar: An Army veteran, he currently serves as Assistant Dean of University College where he is responsible for the strategic academic success of students who are first in their families to go to college and from limited income and racially diverse backgrounds. In this role, he oversees TRIO McNair Scholars Program, University College’s Academic Diversity Outreach, and TRIO Student Support Services. Akbar has worked at Kent State for over ten years in various positions including: Director of Diversity Outreach in EHHS and Assistant Director of Student Success Programs. Prior to Kent State, Dr. Akbar worked at the University of Michigan in Career Services and Student Conduct. He holds a Ph.D. in Cultural Foundations of Education from Kent State University, a Master of Arts in Educational Leadership, and a Bachelor of Science in History and English for Secondary Education (both from Eastern Michigan University).

Colleen VanNatta, Lt Col (Ret): Her career highlights include graduating from Kent State's Air Force ROTC detachment, serving as a media escort for Joint Information Bureaus in Dubai and Dhahran during Operation Desert Storm, first female Public Affairs Officer for the United States Air Force Thunderbirds, ROTC assistant professor at Alabama State University, Chief of Public Affairs at Kunsan Air Base in Korea, and Deputy Commander for the Mission Support Group, which is the largest group at Youngstown Air Reserve Station, Ohio.

Meet fellow Kent State alumni, faculty, staff and students who have served. Guests, friends and loved ones are invited to attend as well. Veterans are encouraged to submit a photo of themselves during their time of service to be included in a slideshow during the luncheon. Photo can be attached to the online registration form.
This event is complimentary, but registration (opening in October) is required by Nov. 1. Parking will be free in the Kent Student Center pay lot on Summit Road.
