At the Table: Recipes for Change

We invite you to join us “At the Table” in celebration of the Kent State University Women’s Center 25th Anniversary. The table is where communities gather, conversations transpire, healing happens, and change begins.

As we explore the power of gathering, we are reminded that food -- the fare most commonly found “At the Table” -- has been a powerful common denominator in all movements throughout history. Food feeds those who are hungry, weary and striving; food sustains the souls of those who are moving forward -- physically, intellectually, artistically, emotionally and spiritually -- to create change. Food is the fuel of those who organize, advocate, rally and march. Food is also about stories. Sometimes those stories take the form of beloved recipes; sometimes those stories are the narratives of those who find common cause in seeking a more equitable environment for all.

We believe your recipes and stories matter. We invite you to share a family recipe, a new recipe, and/or a story about how being “At the Table” has strengthened you and propelled you forward.

Please contribute (by Friday, July 30th)

  • a cherished recipe with a brief story about the recipe here  and/or
  • your story about a “recipe” for hope or change or how being “At the Table” has strengthened you and propelled you forward here
  • a photo to share related to your story or recipe by email to cpeggkir@kent.edu (optional).

Our goal is to create a commemorative “At the Table” cookbook featuring many of the recipes and stories we receive. We will publish a limited number of commemorative print editions to raise money for Women’s Center Scholarships and to help challenge food insecurity on campus. We will also provide excepts from this collection online.

Finally, we remind you to join our monthly “At the Table” conversation series. Please join us as we honor those who have paved the way and as we invest in those who are continuing the journey on the quest for equity and inclusion. You can learn more about these opportunities and all the Women’s Center has to offer at www.kent.edu/womenscenter.
