Joining the Band

Membership in the Marching Golden Flashes is based on an audition process, registration in the “Marching Band” class, and attendance at all Band Camp activities.

Here is the timeline to follow in order to join the MGF:

  • Step 1 - Review the audition requirements for your area of interest. 
  • Step 2  Sign-up for Band Camp
    • Brass and Woodwind players have the option to submit a recorded audition or audition in person during camp. 
    • Drumline members will audition at camp.

    • Deadline to sign-up: July 17, 2020.  
  • Step 3 – Register Marching Band class on Flashline.
    • Deadline is Aug. 1.
    • Note: Incoming first-year students will do this during DKS Orientation.
  • Step 4 – Complete your in-person audition and attend Band Camp.

Band Camp

Band Camp: August 16-25, 2020

All potential members of the MGF are to check in the lobby of the Center for the Performing Arts located at the corner of Horning Road and E. Main Street.

Brass & Woodwind

  • Video Option: Due Aug. 1.
    • Sign-up for Band Camp here.
    • On the Band Camp sign-up form, select "I would like to submit a video audition."
    • Upload a video link to YouTube, making sure that the "Visibility" is set to "Unlisted" for your privacy.
    • Email your video to by Aug. 1. 
  • In-person Option: Mon., Aug. 17
    • Sign up for Band Camp here.
    • On the Band Camp sign-up form, select "I would like to participate in a live audition during the first day of Band Camp." 
  • Materials for all auditionees:
    • Two-octave chromatic scale (to demonstrate range)
    • One minute of prepared music.*

*Prepared music may be one piece with contrasting parts or two different pieces, demonstrating beauty of tone, phrasing and musicality, and technical ability. It is recommended you prepare a “classical” selection (ex: a piece from the OMEA Solo and Ensemble Festival catalog), but you are welcome to choose whatever you believe will best demonstrate your abilities. We encourage you to play your audition on whichever instrument you feel most comfortable, marching or concert.


  • Auditions will be held on Sunday, Aug. 16 in two blocks—afternoon and evening times. 
  • Students will be expected to perform exercises out of the drumline packet for your desired instrument. You can find the music here.
  • Audition results will be based on preparedness and the ability to function within the drumline during rehearsal. The results will be determined that evening.

Visual Ensemble

The Kent State University Colorguard and Touch of Gold Twirlers hold separate auditions each season.


  • Please email a link to a video audition to by Monday, July 13
  • The video should contain the following:
    • Minimum three basic skills (i.e. Drop Spins, Carving, Toss, etc.)
    • Across the Floor:
      • Jazz Walk
      • Jazz Run
      • Any other dance skills you wish to display
      • NOTE: This should be done to music and/or metronome to display timing)
    • 1 Minute Routine: This routine should show your skill set and level of training.

  • Auditions will be held in early August.
