Join fellow Kent State University alumni and friends at The National Press Club Thursday, April 27, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Washington Program in National Issues (WPNI) and the WPNI Class of 2023’s completion of the program.
Established in 1973, at the suggestion of Kent State alumna Frances Richardson, ’39, WPNI is a 15-week academic program held each spring semester in the most dynamic political environment in the world, Washington, D.C. The program provides an opportunity for junior and senior Kent State students from various academic disciplines to study national and international politics, culture and history, science and technology, and public policy with Kent State University faculty and Washington’s experts.
To honor WPNI’s milestone achievement, you are invited to an evening of festivities marking this half-century partnership between Kent State and Washington, D.C. For those able to attend, individual tickets and sponsorships are available. If you are unable to attend but wish to support WPNI’s important work, please consider making a gift to the WPNI fund.
Proceeds from the event will support students in the WPNI program.
The Lake County Alumni Chapter is honored to host Kent State University President Todd Diacon, who will deliver remarks regarding the state of the university at the 2023 Blue and Gold Dinner. The chapter will toast to Kent State, which is celebrating 113 years since its founding, and most importantly, we will recognize and honor the 2023 Lake County Alumni Chapter scholarship recipients.
Tickets: $35 each paid at the door only (cash, check and Venmo will be accepted). Advance registation is appreciated.
RSVP by May 18.

According to the World Health Organization, approximately 1 billion people have a disability. And prioritizing accessibility is not just the right thing to do—it’s also good for business.
In this webinar, experts from Microsoft will provide insight into the intersection of business, IT, and human-centric design. They’ll also be looking at the DevOps Dojo Green Belt for Accessibility and the tools it offers for creating accessible products.
Other topics include:
- Introducing user experience (UX) design concepts
- Applying principles of UX design to create accessible interfaces and experiences for all users
- Integrating DevOps practices to achieve empathy, inclusion, and accessibility
Together, we can create a more inclusive and empathetic future in technology. Accessibility is not only about disability — it is about everyone being able to understand, navigate, consume, and contribute equally without barriers.
Let’s Rock! Join author and Kent State alumnus Chas Madonio as he takes you on a trip down memory lane. Madonio will discuss his new book, "Bars, Bands, and Rock 'n Roll: The Golden Era in Kent, Ohio,” which highlights the city’s vibrant music scene in the 60s and 70s.
As a frequent performer, Madonio shares his unique perspective on how key societal moments like President Kennedy’s assassination and the repercussions of May 4 shaped the city’s future and spawned many careers, including Joe Walsh from the Eagles. He’ll reminisce about some of Kent’s mainstay musicians and share behind-the-scenes insights about the local bars, their owners and the humorous characters that hung out downtown.
After his presentation, which will also be livestreamed, guests can enjoy reminiscing with other Golden Flashes at an outdoor dessert reception.

Theme
The theme of the 2023 AMLCI Materials Day “Chirality & Optical Activity” recognizes the pivotal role chirality plays in nature and in materials science. Chirality—the absence of mirror symmetry—is a fundamental concept involved in the creation, assembly, and specificity of biological, chemical, mechanical and optical properties of materials and is intricately woven into the fabric of the origin of life itself. The keynote, presented by Prof. Noel A. Clark from the University of Colorado at Boulder, “Liquid Crystals, Chirality, and the Origin of Life: Features of an Ancient Liquid Crystal World”, will be a testament to this notion. Introducing chirality to liquid crystals in particular has led to a wealth of new phases, phenomena, and devices, and MD2023 will attempt to capture the tremendous role chirality has played and will continue to play in the future.
This year, Materials Day 2023 is co-hosted by the AMLCI and the Design Innovation (DI) Initiative at KSU, and we will again convene in the lower level of the Integrated Sciences Building on the KSU main campus. Topics will range from chirality’s key role for the origin of life and chiral nanomaterials to devices that take advantage of chiral solutes inducing chiral liquid crystal phases. In addition, MD2023 is the venue where we will introduce the AMLCI−DI “Materials & Devices Start-Up Challenge”; a competition for multidisciplinary entrepreneurial teams to generate ideas, develop prototypes, and create a business model toward the generation of a minimum viable product (MVP).

Noel A. Clark, Professor of Distinction and Director - Soft Materical Research Center, University of Colorado at Boulder

April 28, 2023
Noel Clark was born in 1940 in Cleveland, Ohio, where he received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in physics from John Carroll University. He received his Ph.D. from MIT in 1970 and joined the Harvard University Division of Applied Sciences as a research fellow and junior faculty. He moved to Boulder in 1977 where he is currently Professor of
Physics at the University of Colorado. Clark's research has concerned various aspects of soft condensed matter and complex fluid physics, including liquid crystals, colloids and biophysics. He has been involved in fundamental studies of liquid crystal ordering in a variety of systems, creating novel phases and exploring the role of chirality in soft materials. In recent years his research has focused on the role of liquid crystals sin the appearance of DNA in early life. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA. In 2003 was awarded the Oliver E. Buckley Condensed Matter Physics Prize of the American Physical Society, and in 2016 the inaugural Pierre Gilles de Gennes Prize of the International Liquid Crystal Society for career achievement in liquid crystal science.
