Founded in 1965 by Glenn H. Brown, Kent State University's Liquid Crystal Institute is the world’s first research center focused on the science of liquid crystals. In fall 2018, it was renamed the Advanced Materials and Liquid Crystal Institute (AMLCI) to reflect its expanded focus—and in summer 2019, Torsten Hegmann, Ph.D., was named its new director.
