When Madelyn Orcutt arrived at Kent State University, she was a Canton, Ohio, student looking for a great education close to home. What she found was the world. Through Kent State’s education-abroad program, Orcutt studied in Florence, Italy, learning design and history from Italian professors inside a renovated 18th-century palazzo, and participated in a workshop in New York City in partnership with the Lebanese American University. The proposed Kent State University Rwanda marks the next chapter in the university’s partnership with Rwanda: a formal academic presence in Kigali focused on education, workforce development and the creative economy. The initiative was formally introduced during a high-level symposium on June 19, 2026.

These efforts reflect a long-standing relationship with Rwanda and provide the foundation for future growth.
