The Kent State University Board of Trustees will hold its next regular business meeting Wednesday, Dec. 5. Kent State University resident assistants earned the opportunity to embark on an adventure of a lifetime to experience a new culture at a university in Australia. Kent State University’s Tara Smith, Ph.D., professor of epidemiology in the College of Public Health, told SELF Magazine that people need to be vigilant about hand-washing to prevent the spread of disease, particularly after air travel. “People are carrying pathogens from all over the world, so it’s more likely you’ll be exposed to something that you haven’t encountered before,” Dr. Smith told SELF magazine. Through a three-year grant from the US Department of Health and Human Services, Kent State University’s Center for Public Policy and Health will partner with the seven public schools in Medina County and the Medina County Alcohol, Drug Addiction & Mental Health Board to improve student mental wellness. Dreamers and Doers: Lainey Ward

Heart of gold. Life was just beginning for Lainey Ward when doctors worked on her heart to keep it beating. A 4-month-old baby, Ms. Ward was in the fight of her life before she knew what living really meant. Her whole world was mom and dad and the mobile dancing over her crib. Open-heart surgery and operations to fix three birth defects kept Ms. Ward pushing forward, overcoming diagnosis after diagnosis. First, the girl who would not live, did. As a passionate student of the arts, Bethany Westphal felt the need to share her love with others, specifically younger children, and help them avoid some of the negative experiences she had with music teachers growing up.
