    Biography

    Dr. Kim is Associate Professor in The School of Multidisciplinary Social Sciences and Humanities at Kent State University. His research focuses on investigating the notion of vital energy (gi/qi) in Korean and Chinese Confucianism. He is the author of Zhang Zai’s Philosophy of Qi: A Practical Understanding (Lexington Books, 2015) and is the co-editor of The Idea of Qi/Gi: East Asian and Comparative Philosophical Perspectives (Lexington Books, 2019). Also, he has published articles concerning the Confucian philosophies of gi/qi in journals such as Philosophy East and West, Asian Philosophy, Frontiers in Chinese Philosophy, Acta Koreana, Korea Journal. In addition, he has published book chapters concerning the Confucian philosophies of gi/qi in anthologies such as Dao Companion to Korean Confucian Philosophy (Springer Press. 2019) and Chinese Philosophy and Its Thinkers: From Ancient Times to the Present Day (Bloomsbury Press, 2024). He will contribute a book chapter on the Korean philosophies of gi for the Oxford Handbook of Korean Philosophy (Oxford University Press, forthcoming).
