Kent State Columbiana Writing Center

Serving the Salem and East Liverpool campuses
Our goal is to produce better writers, not just better writing!

Tutors are working virtually.  Due to COVID-19, the physical tutoring spaces on both campuses are closed.

We help:

  • Any Student
  • Any Level
  • Any Discipline
  • Any Writing Project
  • Any Stage of the Writing Process: prewriting, drafting, revision, documentation (APA, MLA, etc.), and editing (finding later-order-concern errors).

Current Appointment Types:

Remote Online Writing Lab (OWL) Email Appointment:

Send your paper to us with assignment information and a tutor responds and sends it back to you during their scheduled time.

Remote Google Video/ Chat Appointment:

Sign up for a real time appointment with a tutor by selecting an open time on the Scheduler. Much like an in-person session, your tutor will collaborate with you to improve your writing skills. You will need to be on your Kent State University Gmail account for the duration of the appointment. Your tutor will guide you through the chat and video functions during your session.

Will the tutor “fix” my paper?

Tutors follow both best practices in tutoring and Kent guidelines that require YOUR individual work. While this is not an editing service, tutors WILL help you to make choices about your paper. In the long run, this will make you a stronger writer.

Writing Guides

Meet Our Tutors!

Mariah Lanzer

My name is Mariah Lanzer and I am a senior English major with a minor in creative writing and a minor in professional writing. This is my second semester of being a writing tutor. I  enjoy tutoring because I like to share my love of writing with others. I find it rewarding when students get excited over an idea, and when given the chance, I encourage students to write about what they are passionate about.

Katie Larabee

My name is Katie Larabee and this will be my third year tutoring at the Academic Learning Commons. I am seeking a bachelor's degree in business management and am a mother to two wonderful young boys. What I enjoy most about tutoring fellow students is aiding each one to achieve their writing goals and develop skills catered toward their degree programs.

Skyllar

Hello! I’m Skyllar and I’m a psychology major. Fall 2020 begins my second year as a writing tutor, and I’m excited to be here! I enjoy tutoring writing because of the connection I create with the people I work with. Collaborating with the many different people I meet is super rewarding!
