Alumna’s Graphic Novel Turned into TV Show

Cece Bell is a 1998 graduate of the Master of Arts program at Kent State’s School of Visual Communication Design. After graduation from Kent, she went on to write and illustrate more than a dozen books. 

Her most recent accomplishment is the development of her graphic novel “El Deafo” into an Apple TV animated series. The three-part animated series aired on Jan. 7, 2022.

 

 

“El Deafo” is based on Bell's personal struggles and experiences growing up hearing impaired. She lost most of her hearing after contracting meningitis at age 4. The story takes you on a journey of how Bell managed to turn her hearing impairment into her own unique superpower.
