Kent State University’s Office of Sustainability and the Women’s Center are hosting the 7th Annual Bra Recycling Drive, October 1 – November 2, to collect reusable or worn-out bras and reduce the number of textiles in landfills. Bras and other clothing that are in good condition will be donated to the Phyllis Zumkehr County Clothing Center. Worn-out bras will be recycled. Motivated by the low voltage driven actuation of ionic electroactive polymers (iEAPs) [1][2], recently we began investigating ionic elastomers. In this talk I will discuss the preparation, physical characterization and electric bending actuation properties of two novel ionic elastomers: ionic polymer electrolyte membranes (iPEM) and ionic liquid crystal elastomers (iLCE).
