The lecture series created in 2022 to honor the legacy of Kent State University Professor Emeritus of Sociology Jerry M. Lewis, Ph.D., will feature Kent State Assistant Professor of Higher Education Administration Erica Eckert, Ph.D., presenting “Where Were the Administrators? A Student Affairs Perspective on May 4, 1970,” as this year’s selected speaker. The Jerry M. The Maltempi family is not your average Kent State family. Three generations of the Maltempi family have attended Kent State University and are proud to have seven family members who have graduated from or are currently attending Kent State. Carlo Maltempi, an immigrant and first-generation student, started this Kent State legacy when he began as a student in 1964. Carlo received his bachelor’s degree and master’s degrees in Spanish from Kent State and was on campus until 1970. Gail Pavliga, ’91, MA ’98, Ph.D., is a good listener, a quality that has been the common thread throughout her life as a student, mother, therapist and, most recently, state representative for Ohio House District 72. Pavliga didn’t plan to be a politician. When she first enrolled at Kent State, she wanted to pursue a premedical degree and was moving toward that goal when she got married and started a family. Still, she knew she wanted to continue her education, so she pieced together the courses she would need from the Stark, Salem and Kent campuses to earn a bachelor’s degree in psychology...
