Lifespan doctoral students get published

It’s not every day that college students see their research published by a leading academic journal while still enrolled at a university. But that’s exactly what happened when seven doctoral candidates enrolled in EHHS’ Curriculum & Instruction (Literacy) Ph.D. program submitted their research for publication. “Not many universities have doctoral students who actually publish in top tier journals while still in their studies,” said Literacy Education Professor Timothy Rasinski, Ph.D., who is a co-author of the study. “This is a monumental achievement that sets these students apa...

Kent State University President Todd Diacon and others shared poems written for the recent publication “Dear Vaccine: Global Voices Speak to the Pandemic,” at the book’s release party this spring.  Among the many other poems influenced by the events of the last two years, Diacon’s contribution described the COVID-19 vaccine as a short, sharp pain after a year of dull ache. His poem is part of a much larger, global community poem that highlights different viewpoints on the world-wide pandemic.   The book, published in April by Kent State University Press, invited poets from...

Women, in keeping with the fashions of the time, were wearing shorter skirts, bobbing their hair, wearing makeup, smoking cigarettes, doing the latest “shag” dances and riding unescorted in cars with men. Detailed codes of conduct for students, which prohibited these behaviors, were largely ineffective.  Frustrated by evolving student conduct, Dean of Women Zoe Bayliss resigned in 1922, because ...

NBA's Michael Kidd-Gilchrist

Even those who perform at the highest levels of talent struggle with challenges that change the way they live. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, a former NBA player, spoke to a Kent State Speech Pathology class via Zoom to address the difficulties living with stuttering as an adult and professional athlete. “I’m honored and blessed to have a name in society, but I always felt lonely because of it [his stutter], even in the NBA,” Kidd-Gilchrist told the class. “I used to worry if I opened up, how that would look. I felt bad. I felt angry. I felt like I had to do all that I could do to fix this pr...

Grace Conrad made projectile points out of cow femur bones, similar to the Clovis technology.

Sometimes it just takes a small spark to ignite a fire within you. For Anna Mika, who started as a geology major her freshman year and switched to anthropology the following year, that spark came in 2017 while taking an Anthropology course called North America’s Ice Aged Hunters, taught by Metin I. Eren, Ph.D., associate professor and director of archaeology in the College of Arts & Sciences at Kent State University. She said that course changed her perspective on everything.   At the time, Mika probably couldn’t have imagined that spark leading her to being named one of just 25 Har...
