Karen Cunningham, associate professor with the Center for Applied Conflict Management (now the School of Peace and Conflict Studies) at Kent State University, was recently asked by YES! The recent measles outbreak in the United States has stirred up a lot of debate about getting children vaccinated. Kent State University associate professor Tara Smith in the College of Public Health shared her views with CNN on what does and does not influence parents to vaccinate their children.  Smith points to psychological studies where showing parents positive medical data can often do more harm than good. Gerald (Jerry) Payto’s father taught him an important lesson early on in life. “He used to say, ‘You really don’t receive until you give,’” Jerry said. “That has stuck in my mind my whole life."
