A Musical Evening at the Choufleuris' Synopsis

Synopsis

A newly-rich Monsieur Choufleuri invites the upper-class society to an evening soiree where three notable Italian singers will be performing. All three of the singers become indisposed at the last minute crushing Choufleuri's hopes of an impressive event. Choufleuri's daughter, Ernestine, has been secretly seeing a young composer and singer, Chrysodule Babylas of whom her father strongly objects because of his lowly status as a musician. Ernestine, however, saves her father's party by impersonating Sontag, the soprano, and insisting that Babylas impersonate Rubini, the tenor. Choufleuri himself takes the part of the bass, Tamburini, in disguise. Choufleuri's rather incompetent servant, Petermann makes the ruse difficult to pull off, but ultimately the deception works and the audience is thoroughly impressed. Choufleuri is fooled into agreeing to the marriage of Ernestine and Babylas and all ends happily.
