How to Add Alt Text in Canvas

What is Alt Text

Alternative (alt) text is a brief description of an image that allows people using screen readers to understand its content and purpose. It is read aloud by screen readers and displayed if an image does not load, helping make visual information accessible to users with visual impairments.

This guide explains how to add alt text to images in Canvas

Step 1: Select the Image and Open Image Options

  1. Enter the Edit options of your Page, Assignment, Discussion, etc. in Canvas.
  2. Click once on the image you want to describe.
  3. Click Image Options.
    1. A screenshot of the Canvas text editor within a page labeled "Edit Example for Alt Text." An image of a person working at a desk is embedded in the editor. A tooltip labeled "Image Options" appears above the photo and is called out with a red box, indicating the interface element used to access image settings and accessibility features.
  4. The Image Options pane will open on the right side of the screen.

Step 2: Add the Alt Text or Mark as Decorative

  1. In the Alt Text field, type a short, meaningful description of the image. In the description, focus on the purpose of the image rather than visual details alone.
    1. Tip! No need to type "image of" or "picture of." The screen reader already recognizes that it is an image.
  2. If the image is purely decorative and does not add information, check the box next to Decorative Image to mark it as decorative.
  3. Be sure to choose Done at the bottom of the Image Options pane.
    1. A screenshot of the "Image Options" sidebar in a Canvas editor. The "Alt Text" field is populated with the description: "A person wearing headphones is working on a laptop at a desk with books and a lamp" and is called out with a red box. The interface also includes a checkbox to mark the image as decorative called out with a red box, display settings for embedding or linking, and fields for adjusting image dimensions in pixels. There is a Done button at the bottom also called out with a red box.

Step 3: Save or Save & Publish

  1. Scroll to the bottom right of the screen.
  2. Choose Save or Save & Publish to ensure the Alt Text is saved to the image.
    1. A screenshot of the Save options from the rich content editor of a Page in Canvas. The options include Cancel, Save & Publish, or Save.
