Mind Mapping

What is a Mind Map:

  • Is a visual representation of information that includes a central idea surrounded by connected branches of associated topics.
  • Is a beneficial learning tool to help students brainstorm or organize any topic.
  • Can be created individually or with a tutor!

Step One: Generate

  • Create a central image that represents your topic.
  • From this central image, draw branching lines that radiate outwards.
  • Use key words to convey information.

Step Two: Associate Freely

  • Let your mind explore freely.  Don't dismiss any ideas yet--even if they seem random!
    • Weird ideas can lead to breakthroughs!
    • What matters during this stage is getting what's in your brain down on paper, no matter the reason or order!
  • Use several colors for branches, symbols, and key words!
  • Remember--this map is for you; the drawings should help you remember ideas.  They don't have to be masterpieces!

Step Three: Review and Organize

  • After you've poured all of your ideas onto the page, consider taking a break from your map and returning to it with a fresh perspective!
  • You can prioritize and highlight important points, and group related ideas using symbols, arrows and lassos!
  • The organization phase also offers a chance to ask reflective questions:
    • What were your objectives upon starting the map?  Are they still the same?
    • How does seeing the whole picture and all the parts influence your thinking?
    • Do any areas look more developed than others?

Step Four: Create a New Map

  • Redraw the map after Step Three so that it's neat and easy to follow!
