Freshman respiratory therapy student, Hayley Sichko, with new MetaNeb equipment.

Kent State University at Ashtabula received a new $5,000 respiratory therapy equipment grant from Hill-Rom, a manufacturer for medical devices, that will provide students with a new learning opportunity. The MetaNeb system, which provides three therapies in one, allows respiratory therapists to give patients inhaled medication, deliver positive expiratory pressure to the lungs and distribute vibrations to loosen phlegm. “The machine combines everything together to give better therapy than other individual pieces of equipment,” says Amy Rodenhausen, director of clinical education for the...

A pair of Kent State University geographers have teamed up to secure two research grants totaling more than $550,000 for separate projects to study climate change and weather patterns. Geography Professor and Chair Scott Sheridan, Ph.D., will lead a project titled “Using a Synoptic Climatological Framework to Assess Predictability of Anomalous Coastal Sea Levels in NOAA High-Priority Areas,” while Assistant Professor Cameron Lee, Ph.D., will lead another project called “Developing Extreme Event Climate Change Indicators Related to Human Thermal Comfort.” Drs. Kent State University Athletics is the first in the Mid-American Conference to provide student-athletes with a cryotherapy chamber. The therapy uses subzero temperatures, under 200 degrees Fahrenheit, to help muscles recover quickly. The department installed the chamber in the Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center (MAC Center) Annex building in Kent State’s Athletic Training and Education Center in the summer. The walk-in chamber uses liquid nitrogen to cool the air for one-to-three minute cycles. Skin temperature can decrease as much as 40 degrees. The frigid air helps decrease pai...

The conditions in Lake Erie continue to pose several health risks to Ohioans in coastal communities, making it difficult to maintain good water quality for citizen. A recent publication in Frontiers in Marine Science shows how researchers in the Great Lakes region are working toward innovative solutions. John Lekki, Ph.D., NASA Glenn Research Center’s principal investigator, in collaboration with co-investigators from local universities including Kent State University won a NASA water quality proposal in June 2017. This recent grant offers an opportunity to implement Kent State’s ...

According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), the number of monarch butterflies has decreased significantly over the last 20 years. A nationwide effort is underway to help the species through many programs from large-scale partnerships to individuals doing their part at home. According to the USFWS, citizen scientists are providing significant contributions to monarch-focused research and growth. One such “citizen scientist” is Ellen Daniels, MBA, lecturer in Kent State University’s Department of Marketing and Entrepreneurship. Between training students for sales competi...

Trevor Watkins, University Libraries, Cameron Hughes and Tracey Hughes, presented “A Little Artificial Intelligence Help With Syslog” at the Ohio Linuxfest 2017 in Columbus, Ohio, on Sept. 30. Summary: The proliferation of mobile computing, PAAS, SAAS, IAAS and virtualization has increased the burden of log file analysis for the system administration and programming function. The spike in the number of log entries has made log analysis by manual human effort untenable and log analysis essential. Effective log file analysis is not an exact science. A useful log analysis process often re...
