EHHS Dean James Hannon and Alicia Crowe, associate dean for Undergraduate Education and Student Services, and three EHHS students recently visited the statehouse in Columbus as representatives from the Ohio Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (OACTE).
As part of 'Day on the Square,' the group spoke with legislators about education policy they support, and also voiced concerns about current legislation.
Students Mallory Birney, Amanda Jodon, and Sarah Pallutch shared their experiences participating in a comprehensive educator preparation program, and answered questions about their educational experiences.
"It is interesting to see where all of the decisions for our state are made, and to talk to those representing us," said Amanda Jodon,'24, a senior majoring in early childhood education. "Being given an opportunity to share your thoughts and ideas face-to-face with people who have the power to put those ideas into action is such an empowering experience. Knowing that my voice was directly heard...I cannot wait to continue advocating for educators in the state of Ohio. "
Crowe serves OACTE President-Elect and Dean Hannon is the Co-Chair of the State University Education Deans (SUED).
"Having the opportunity to attend the Day on the Square in Columbus for the second year in a row was an amazing opportunity," said Sarah Pallutch, '24. "I am passionate about teaching, so being able to speak about the education program at Kent State and my experiences is so fun. Knowing that I can voice my opinions as a future educator and have the chance to make a difference in our government is very rewarding."
"We had an incredible opportunity to speak with Senator Sykes' aids, and representatives Pavliga and Beryl Piccalantonio to talk about house bills 168 and 411," said Mallory Birney. "Each office valued our opinions as future educators and wanted to hear about our views on these bills. They also asked about our teaching philosophy and truly got to know us as individuals."
OACTE is comprised of Ohio public and private higher education institutions engaged in educating highly effective teachers who promote student learning. It advocates and provides leadership for the state of Ohio by working collaboratively toward a common purpose.
SUED is an association of education deans from Ohio’s thirteen public Colleges of Education. Working in collaboration with the Ohio Department of Higher Education, the Ohio Department of Education, and other educational entities, SUED ensures that the highest quality candidates are prepared for schools, agencies, and other professional settings.
