Working It Commencement is my favorite time of the year. I have the best seat in the house to watch our amazing students celebrate their successes with friends and family. After each ceremony, Provost Tankersley and I revel in the opportunity to meet graduates individually and to take impromptu photos with them in and around Risman Plaza. Each year, Kent State graduates more than 10,000 students with degrees that empower them to become productive members of the workforce or find career enhancement with an advanced degree. More than 63% of our graduates remain in Ohio and throughout t...

    Photo of Tara Smith.

Get to know Dr. Tara Smith, professor of epidemiology in the College of Public Health. What do you do at Kent State's College of Public Health? I’m a professor of epidemiology, focusing on infectious diseases. What is your latest research/project? Since the pandemic, I’ve been working more on aspects of science communication, vaccine hesitancy, and infectious disease history. I’m finishing a project now comparing chronic brucellosis infection, often caused by drinking raw milk in the early half of the 20th century, to aspects of long COVID-19 infection today. Your favorite t...

Kent State Names College of Public Health Student Anaya Spencer as its 2023-2024 Newman Civic Fellow

    Photo of Anaya Spencer

Since she was little, Anaya Spencer has experienced the value of the community. Like her grandmother, who ran a home daycare in the inner city of Cleveland, and her mother, a nurse and community health worker, she has devoted herself to serving communities that face injustices. Her commitment has led her to serve on the executive board of multiple student organizations, and to educate community members about social issues. Now, following her family legacy, Spencer will pursue her passion for championing Black maternal and infant health and equity as Kent State University’s 2023-2024 Newman ...
