JWST 40095 | ST: American Jewish Experience | CRN 19929

The American Jewish Experience is a course which examines not only the history of Jews in the United States, but more importantly looks at their impact on not only Jewish History but also American History. Students will trace the American Jewish Experience from the arrival of the first Jews in New Amsterdam, through their establishing communities during the period before and after the American Revolution. As the students study the major waves of Jewish immigration to America they will learn how Jews impact the historical events of the times. The course will conclude by looking at the contributions that Jews have made to the social issues of the late 20th and early 21st centuries.

The class is taught by Sol A. Factor, and it is a remote class, Tuesdays and Thursdays 11:00am-12:15pm.

LGBT 20095 | ST: Fighting Back: Queer Voices and Activism for Pandemic Times | CRN 20274

This course explores AIDS activism in the 1980s and 1990s and its relevance to the current coronavirus pandemic. The course will trace the history of the HIV pandemic, and will explore how global leaders, American politicians, LGBTQ communities, and queer activists responded to the AIDS crisis. Then, we'll apply this knowledge to COVID-19: How can the queer history of AIDS activism inform our thoughts and actions in this current, modern-era pandemic? What relevant lessons can we draw from our American queer history?

The class is taught by assistant professor Lauren Vachon, and it is a synchronous remote class, Wednesdays 5:30-8:15 pm.
