Why did you pursue podiatric medicine?
I chose to pursue podiatric medicine because of the ability to specialize so early in a demanding medical field. Having specialized training before entering residency gives us an opportunity to be familiar with clinical practice in our prospective career.
Why did you choose KSUCPM?
I chose KSUCPM due to how welcomed I felt upon arriving on campus. From administration to our peers, everyone is willing to help every student succeed.
Favorite aspect of Kent State now that you are a student here?
My favorite aspect about Kent State is that even though we are associated with Kent State University, we have our own building/classrooms/cadaver labs.
What advice do you have for anyone considering podiatry school?
Take the time to explore the field by attending virtual seminars, shadowing podiatrists, and getting in touch with both podiatric students and residents. Professionals currently in the field can give the best advice as to what to expect in podiatry.
Have you begun to prepare Boards yet? If so, what are you doing in terms of preparation?
I am organizing a study schedule for myself and am considering starting to review my class notes from year one, starting with anatomy. As I look through the content I have to review, I realize having organized notes for each class beginning year one is a true game changer.
How do you strike a balance between class work, studying, and social activities?
If I ever feel overwhelmed with class work, I make time to go out and enjoy things that can help me relax, such as hiking, going to the gym, or going out to eat. This allows me to “reset” and get back into the mode for studying. It is quite normal in medical school to feel “burnt out,” which is why going out your own pace and taking mental breaks is very important.
Any suggestions for prospective students on building/ maintaining a balance?
Make time for yourself! Rather than constantly fearing about being “behind” or comparing yourself with your peers, remember that every student is different. Prioritize your health, both mental and physical, over everything.
What one word describes you best?
Selfless
What are some activities you are involved in at KSUCPM?
Student Ambassador, ACFAS
As a first-year student, what are some of the challenges you faced while transitioning into medical school?
Classes moved on very fast and before I knew it, I was already preparing for final exams. The biggest change for me was working in a cadaver lab and dissecting multiple times a week. This was my first time in a cadaver lab, so I had to learn the proper dissecting techniques quick as to not get behind on the dissection schedule.
What one word describes KSUCPM?
Passionate
What advice would you offer to any prospective students wishing to attend KSUCPM who are in the current application process?
Please don’t hesitate to visit campus and/or speak to current faculty and students. KSUCPM is located in the heart of Cleveland and is such a great place to spend four years preparing for a profession you will love! Current students love sharing their experiences about classes/social life/plans for post-graduation, so do ask!
Most challenging course and why?
I believed Neurobiology was my most challenging course because of it was only a few weeks long and was offered during a regular semester with a full course load.
