Parent Q&A Session with Dr. Sarah Labovitz (D304)

1:10-2 p.m.

Introduction to Conducting with Dr. Sarah Labovitz (E202)
Learn some beginning conducting skills in the areas of beat pattern, posture and presence. All Open House participants welcome.

Introduction to Improvisation with Prof. Bobby Selvaggio (Ludwig Recital Hall)
Bring an instrument or your voice to participate in this beginning improvisation clinic, where students will explore jazz technique and theory. Open house participants without instruments are welcome to observe.

Caribbean Steelband (C106)
Open House participants are welcome to observe and participate in the Caribbean Steelband ensemble as they learn cultural etiquette associated with steelband traditions of Trinidad and Tobago.

Orchestra  (Band Education Facility)
Bring your instrument and play side by side with the orchestra as they work on repertoire for an upcoming concert. Open house participants without instruments are welcome to observe.

 

Additional Offerings

In addition to our Open House events, which are specific to prospective students and parents, you are welcome to pop in and out of any of the following classes throughout the day.

8:50-9:40 a.m.

Theory I (D105)
Open house participants are welcome to join the first theory course in our music theory sequence. In this class students are learning the building blocks of music.

Theory III (D106)
Open house participants are welcome to join us as we study the theoretical foundations of Western art music.

9:55-10:45 a.m.

Conducting I (Band Education Facility)
Open house participants are welcome to join our introductory conducting class in which all undergraduate music majors learn beat patterns, baton techniques, score reading, music analysis and musical interpretation.

Theory I (D105)
Open house participants are welcome to join the first theory course in our music theory sequence. In this class students are learning the building blocks of music.

Theory III (D106)
Open house participants are welcome to join us as we study the theoretical foundations of Western art music.

11-11:50 a.m.

Marching Band Techniques (Band Education Facility)
Open house participants are welcome to join us as we learn about the organization, administration and techniques of marching bands in schools.

Music History I (D001)
Open house participants are welcome to join us in studying Western music history from the medieval period through the Renaissance.

Music Teaching as a Profession (C304)
Open house participants are welcome to join our music education students as they learn basic teaching strategies and techniques.

Percussion Techniques (C106)
Open House participants are welcome to join us as students learn techniques to perform and teach the various percussion instruments.

11 a.m.-12:15 p.m.

Piano Literature (D106)
Join piano students as they study keyboard suites, sonatas and concerti from the sixteenth century to the present. Emphasis on performing, listening and analysis.

12:05-12:55 p.m.

While our specific Open House events end at 2:00 p.m., you are highly encouraged to attend any of the ensemble rehearsals listed below. You are welcome to bring your instruments to play or sing with us!

The Open House is structured as a "Choose your own Adventure"– come when you want, leave when you must. 

Open House Locations

Musical sessions, courses and ensemble rehearsals take place in two locations: The Hugh A. Gluaser School of Music, located in the Center for the Performing Arts, and the Band Education Facility.

Parking

Due to nearby construction, parking around the building can be limited. If possible, please plan to arrive for registration in the morning. There are several lots adjacent to the Center for the Performing Arts.

Lunch

Our campus tours will end near several of our on-campus dining facilities. We encourage you to try out our dining options. There are also a lot of food options immediately off campus along Main Street.
