Ken Heinlein is Assistant Professor of Tuba (part-time) at Kent State University. In addition to teaching lessons and studio class, Mr. Heinlein performs as a member of the Kent Brass Quintet. He was born and raised in Grayling, Michigan and earned his Bachelor of Music degree from Central Michigan University and studied with Mark Cox. He continued his studies at the Cleveland Institute of Music, where he earned his Master of Music degree studying with Ronald Bishop, former Principal Tuba of the Cleveland Orchestra. Currently, Mr. Heinlein is pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of Michigan, working with Fritz Kaenzig. He has also worked extensively with Yasuhito Sugiyama and Craig Sutherland.

An active performer, Mr. Heinlein holds the position of Principal Tuba in both the Akron Symphony Orchestra and the Erie Philharmonic Orchestra. He is frequently engaged as a substitute performer with a number of larger orchestras, and has performed with the Cleveland Orchestra, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Heinlein is a member of the Blue Water Chamber Orchestra and performs with a number of regional groups across Ohio and Michigan, including CityMusic Cleveland and the Blossom Festival Orchestra. Finally, he performs each summer as Principal Tuba of the Blossom Festival Band, and also performs frequently with the Cleveland Orchestra Brass Quintet.

Mr. Heinlein is a passionate advocate for the important cultural role of music, and to that end has presented masterclasses, workshops, and performances in a variety of schools and settings around the region and across the country. He continues to work to connect with people through music and is always excited to meet new people and work with new ensembles.
