James Unger

What is your educational background?

After graduating from Kent State in 1967 with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree, I joined Miller Transfer where I held various positions, ultimately serving as Treasurer and Executive Vice President before becoming the President in 1996. I am now Retired as President of Miller Transfer.

Do you have a favorite memory from your time at Kent State?

My very favorite memory of Kent is when I met my wife, Evelyn. We were both celebrating the end of spring quarter at a local pub.

What was your campus involvement as a Kent State student?

I was an officer in Scabbard and Blade, an honorary military organization on campus. It stressed both the educational and social aspects of the military. I met my best life-long friend during this time.

How do you give back to Kent State?

In addition to making a gift to Crawford Hall, my wife and I have established annual scholarships in the Ambassador Crawford College of Business and Entrepreneurship and the College of Education, Health and Human Services. I also serve on the National Advisory Board for the Ambassador Crawford College of Business and Entrepreneurship.

How did your Kent State degree impact your career?

My degree allowed me to function in a start-up organization and collaborate with others to grow and move the company in a forward direction.

In recognition of your gift, the James R. Unger Global Forum was named in Crawford Hall. Why was it important for you to give to this project?

We know of no better way in which to spend our money than to fund education. The new building will be a great environment for students to meet and exchange ideas. It will also be a place to form lasting business and personal relationships.
