Bryan Caldwell, DPM, MD Returns to CPM as Senior Associate Dean

The College of Podiatric Medicine (CPM) is pleased to announce that Bryan D. Caldwell, DPM, MD, Class of 1989 has assumed the role of Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, effective January 4, 2021!

When Vincent J. Hetherington, DPM announced his retirement following 32 years at CPM in September of last year, the daunting task of filling his shoes began. The next in line for the position would need to embody the "students first" philosophy to implement academic programs to serve student needs and ensure their success during their four years at CPM and beyond to excel in residencies. Following a long and extensive search which included stakeholders from around the College and the podiatric medical community, Caldwell became the clear consensus choice for the position.

An experienced leader in podiatric medicine, Caldwell had previously served 25 years at CPM prior to this new appointment. Filling positions of increasing responsibility at the College since 1994, Caldwell rose to become the Assistant Dean of Clinical Education and Operations before his departure in 2019 to become the Dean of the School of Podiatric Medicine at Barry University. The Kent State community is eager to welcome Caldwell back in this new role to help guide the institution's academic mission.

As befits a leader in the podiatric medical community, Caldwell is an outstanding teacher and scholar who has earned over $500k in research grants over the past decade and had a hand in writing over 20 scholarly publications in his field. A renowned speaker on an international stage, Caldwell is also a respected community member, donating his time to local projects such as the African American Cultural Festival, American Red Cross, Lupus Foundation of America and more.

As Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Caldwell will serve as the College's chief academic officer and second-highest ranking executive officer. He will oversee recruitment, placement, and support of professional faculty, and develop academic standards relative to admissions. In addition, Caldwell will be serving as the liaison to the Council on Podiatric Medical Education to directly oversee all aspects of College accreditation.

Caldwell brings a rich portfolio of experience and extensive knowledge of the profession, CPM, and its educational processes. As he returns to CPM in this new capacity, he has the extraordinary opportunity to enhance the strategic direction of the College, its academic programs, and the day to day training of future physicians. CPM Dean, Allan M. Boike, DPM, says he is honored to welcome Caldwell back to the Kent State family. "I have had the great pleasure of observing Dr. Caldwell's expertise and dedication to our students for 25 years," he said, "and look forward to the advancement that his service in this new role will undoubtedly bring to the institution."

Dean Boike wishes to thank all who took part in this selection process for their dedication, energy, and enthusiasm.

Please join CPM in welcoming Caldwell back to CPM in this critical role, and thanking him for his commitment to the College as it continues the momentum and impact created by this extraordinary community.
