Kent State University’s 2024-25 Excellence in Undergraduate Research Mentoring Award Winners.

Kent State University is pleased to announce the two winners of both the Excellence in Graduate Research Mentorship Award and Excellence in Undergraduate Research Mentorship Award. As part of the nomination process, each nominee received a student-submitted letters of nomination. Thank you to the graduate and undergraduate student committees that assisted in selecting the recipients of these prestigious awards.  

Dr. Tao Shen - School of Engineering Assistant Professor

Dr. Tao Shen is an Assistant Professor in the School of Engineering, specializing in medical robots. Dr. Shen has mentored graduate, undergraduate, and College Credit Plus (CCP) students; offering guidance and support as students grow in knowledge and make decisions regarding next steps. Some of the CCP students Shen mentored chose to come to Kent State for their undergraduate studies because of him! Dr. Shen has a strong background in research, and this has greatly benefited his students as they break into the world of research  One  of his students  said, “His heuristic approach to problem-solving not only enhanced my technical skills but also instilled in me a mindset of critical thinking and independent research, which continues to benefit me in my academic pursuits to this day”. Students also praise his laboratory environment, “He manages the laboratory with exceptional organization and professionalism, ensuring that students have access to the necessary resources to succeed. He actively encourages students to voice their ideas in discussions, fostering a culture of intellectual curiosity and collaboration.” It is without a doubt that Dr. Shen has impacted the next generation of engineers and has been an indispensable mentor for this cohort! Congratulations, Dr. Shen! 

Dr. Gargi Bhaduri - School of Fashion Program Lead and Associate Professor

Dr. Gargi Bhaduri is an associate professor and program leader for fashion merchandising at the School of Fashion. She publishes frequently in journals, often about the supply chain and endowing the system with sustainability. Students have called her an “exceptional mentor”, explaining that “she has an incredible ability to challenge her students while also providing the necessary guidance and encouragement to help them excel”. Dr. Bhaduri offers the opportunity to provide students with strong research skills in a field where the approach is generally more hands-on. Students praise how “Dr. Bhaduri embodies the qualities of an outstanding research mentor- intellectual leadership, dedication to student success, and a commitment to fostering a positive and productive learning environment”. Moreover, they say “she is always there to provide support-whether it is through academic guidance or simply checking in on our well-being”. Dr. Bhaduri has certainly created a unique space to help students thrive and become a beloved mentor in her time at Kent State. Congratulations, Dr. Bhaduri!
