Clinics in Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Journal Publishes Associate Professor Dr. Scott Spencer

The College of Podiatric Medicine (CPM) proudly commends Associate Professor and alumni Scott Spencer, DPM, ’87 for his recent publication in the January 2020 issue of the Elsevier published journal, Clinics in Podiatric Medicine and Surgery. The quarterly journal serves to update readers on the latest trends in patient management, as well as the newest advancements in treatment options.

Dr. Spencer’s article, Biomechanical Effects of Shoe Gear on the Lower Extremity, provides the foot health care provider with a better understanding of the effects of shoes on the mechanics of gait based on recent literature. According to Spencer (2020), “The importance of having an understanding of the effects of shoes on the foot function during gait cannot be underestimated and should be incorporated into every pedal evaluation conducted on a patient” (p.98).

By making shoe assessment a habit and understanding the effects shoes can have on the foot during gait, providers can better tailor treatment plans to maximize outcomes, while giving patients greater insight into the possible negative effects their choice of shoes may have on foot function. (p.98)

Dr. Spencer graduated from the former Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine in 1987, is board certified by the American Board of Podiatric Medicine, is a Fellow of the American College of Podiatric Medicine and was recently elected as the President of the Board of Directors for the American College of Podiatric Medicine. An Associate Professor in the Division of Surgery & Biomechanics, Dr. Spencer also currently serves as the Interim Director of Clinic Operations for CPM’s teaching facility, the Cleveland Foot & Ankle Clinic.
