Kent State University presents Black (Music) History Month: A celebration of Black Music Traditions Feb. 12

Kent, OH — Pianist and faculty artist Kent McWilliams will be performing on Sun., Feb. 12 at 5 p.m. as part of the 2022-23 Kent Keyboard Series. From classical to jazz, from art song to spirituals, the music spans 250 years and features pianist Kent McWilliams collaborating with Kent State faculty members: Timothy Culver, tenor; Lamar Hylton, baritone; Eunho Kim, violin; Si-Yan Li, cello; Perry Roth, saxophone; Robert Selvaggio, jazz saxophone, and Darin Olson, conductor. School of Music students Ethan Scheuer, bass, and Corey Hautmann, drumset, will also be performing.

The program celebrates black musical traditions and includes music from James Weldon Johnson, William Grant Still, Margaret Bonds, Joseph Bologne, Oscar Peterson, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, and John Daniel Carter. 

The performance will take place in Ludwig Recital Hall at 1325 Theatre Drive in the Center for the Performing Arts. Live streaming will be available. To view the pricing options and tune in please visit Kent State Arts. 

About Kent McWilliams

An accomplished, award-winning pianist and educator, Dr. Kent McWilliams  holds music performance degrees from the University of Toronto and the University of Montreal as well as an Artist Diploma from the Stuttgart Musikhochschule. Dr. McWilliams made his orchestral debut performing Rachmaninov's Third Concerto with the University of Toronto Symphony Orchestra.. He has performed live on the CBC in Canada and the ABC in Australia. Recently, he released an album on Albany Records with renowned clarinetist Jun Qian titled “East Meets West: Music for Clarinet and Piano by Chinese Composers.” His students have gone on to successful careers in performance and education, with many winning or competing as finalists of numerous local, regional, and national competitions. An in-demand clinician, Dr. McWilliams has given music pedagogy workshops in 25 states and provinces and has also been invited to adjudicate the national finals of the MTNA competition and the Canadian Music Competitions.

Tickets for this performance are available through the Performing Arts Box Office in the Center for the Performing Arts at 1325 Theatre Dr. on the Kent Campus. Prices range from $8 to $15, including free tickets for those 18 and under and full-time Kent Campus undergraduates.
