  • Brass

    Brass

    Students studying brass instruments at Kent State work with specialists of each instrument in lessons and perform chamber music in studio class. 

  • Chamber Music

    Chamber Music

    With a focus on enhancing ensemble playing, musical artistry and technical mastery, the MM in Chamber Music offers pre-formed string quartets the opportunity for intensive study of some of the greatest music ever written. Graduate assistantships are available. 

  • Composition and Theory

    Composition and Theory

    The music theory and composition area features a student-centered approach to academic coursework in all undergraduate and graduate music programs. Degrees are available the bachelor's, master's and doctoral level. 

  • Conducting

    Conducting

    Concentrations are available in choral, orchestral and wind band conducting. Students studying conducting at Kent State will receive significant time on the podium and mentorship from faculty. 

  • Ethnomusicology

    Ethnomusicology

    Kent State is one of only 27 schools of music in the U.S. offering a Master of Arts in Ethnomusicology. The division also offers the World Music minor to undergraduate students as well as ensembles dedicated to the study of Pan-African and Pan-Asian music.

    Kent State is one of only two public universities in Ohio to offer the Bachelors through Ph.D. in Music Education. As part of the program of study, students receive intensive instruction in music theory, music history, ethnomusicology, applied study and education. The program boasts alumni in P-12 and university positions throughout the world.

    At Kent State, students study flute, oboe, clarinet and bassoon with a dedicated artist-teacher who specializes in their instrument. Degrees are offered at the bachelor's and master's levels.
