Your first (and very important!) step is to log in to FlashLine and establish your Kent State student account. FlashLine is a virtual hub of information that you will use throughout your time as a Kent State student.

Get Started

1. To log in for the first time, go to welcome.kent.edu.
2. Enter your Kent State email address (ex. "janedoe@kent.edu"). This can be found in the "Your FlashLine Credentials" email you received after you were admitted.
3. To create your temporary password, enter the following information in the drop down boxes:
   1. The month you were born.
   2. The year you were born.
   3. The last five digits of your Kent State Identification Number. This can be found in your admission letter.
4. Once you have successfully logged in with this temporary password, you will be prompted to select a new password. You will also be asked to provide an alternate email address and answer challenge questions that you can use to reset your password in case it is forgotten.
5. After you establish your account, please save your FlashLine credentials somewhere safe.

Establishing your account in FlashLine allows you to access important financial aid information, the housing application and commuter exemption form, and much more.

To pay the enrollment fee, log in to your applicant portal. This allows you to register for new student orientation, and apply for housing or submit a commuter exemption form.

The enrollment fee is refundable until Dec. 1 for incoming spring students and May 1 for incoming fall students. You can request a refund by contacting your admissions counselor or emailing us at admissions@kent.edu.

KSUview is an easy and safe way to share your student information such as financial aid, personal information (address, phone and email), registration (status and schedule) and your student account (detail, summary, tax notification and holds) with parents, guardians or family members.

This could be helpful if your parents, guardians or family members will help you with financial aid or need information about account balances.

If you would like to give your parent of family member access to your information, complete these steps:

• Log in to FlashLine and select "Student" in the left-hand column.
• Under "Student" select "Resources."
• Under "Resources" select "Requests and Authorizations."
• The webpage will be displayed; select KSUview.
• Choose "Add Designee" and fill in the fields for First Name, Last Name and Email Address for the person you’re giving access to; click "Add Designee."
• Click on "Expand" (designee name). In the Profile tab, complete the information requested for your designee. 
• On the Authorization tab, select the items you’d like your designee to view online.

Pay close attention to dates for financial aid, on-campus housing and new student orientation, called Destination Kent State (DKS). 

New First-Year Students Entering in the Fall 2025 Semester

• December 2024 – The 2025-26 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) opens.
• Feb. 1, 2025 – On-campus housing application opens in your applicant portal.
• Feb. 1, 2025 – Student orientation called Destination Kent State (DKS) registration opens in your applicant portal.

• May 1, 2025 – Priority date to submit the $150 enrollment fee and commit to Kent State.

The 2025-26 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) will open in December 2024. This is one of the most important applications of your college career. To receive the best financial offer from Kent State University, Fall 2025 semester students must submit the FAFSA by Feb. 15, 2025. Be sure to add our FAFSA code: 003051.

ScholarshipUniverse is your hub for finding and applying for scholarships. It is a search portal that will match you to internal (Kent State-specific) and external scholarships. Internal university scholarship applications have deadlines between Feb. 1 and March 1, 2025, while external scholarship deadlines vary. Be sure you keep track of when each application is due.

There are three main events:

• Future Flash Day: Between February and April, visit campus during our landmark admitted student event. In a day personalized to your needs and your major, get any lasting questions answered all while celebrating your acceptance to Kent State!
• Next Steps Events: During March and April, attend these virtual information sessions to learn about your next steps as a student – from orientation to housing and financial aid. A Q&A and virtual campus tour will be offered at the end!
• 30-Minute Flash Topics: In late spring, attend these quick, virtual events to get info on our award-winning student services, clubs and organizations, and all the ways to get involved on campus.

All admitted student events are by invitation only. You will receive a personalized registration link to the email used to apply for admission, or you can access these events in your applicant portal.

You can apply to live in one of our 20+ residence halls and several Living-Learning Programs (programs where students with similar interests live together) beginning Oct. 15 for incoming spring students and Feb. 1 for incoming fall students in your applicant portal.

If you plan to commute, you will need to submit a commuter exemption form in your applicant portal beginning Oct. 15 for incoming spring students and Feb. 1 for incoming fall students.

What is Destination Kent State (DKS)?

DKS new student orientation is your required orientation experience where you will meet with your academic advisor to register for classes, make friends and so much more. You can register for your preferred DKS date in your applicant portal.

Registration opens Oct. 15 for incoming spring students and Feb. 1 for incoming fall students.

Placement Testing Before Attending DKS

You must complete any and all placement testing at least three days before attending DKS, before meeting your academic advisor or before Aug. 25, 2025. Information on "ALEKS," the mathematics placement assessment can be found here. Information on the foreign language placement assessment can be found here.

You will be notified when you can view and accept decline or reduce your financial aid awards (including federal aid, state aid and university scholarships) in FlashLine.

• First-time federal loan borrowers: Sign the Master Promissory Note and complete entrance counseling. You must complete these to receive federal aid. During entrance counseling, you'll learn about direct loans, budgeting, repayment options and your rights as a borrower. In order to use your federal student aid for non-institutional charges, complete your Title IV authorization.
• Returning federal loan borrowers: Monitor federal loan borrowing, view loan history and find servicer information on StudentAid.gov. Report outside scholarships, awards and other tuition assistance you are bringing to Kent State on the Offer tab of your Financial Aid Dashboard in FlashLine.

There are a few more things you need to do before the semester starts:

• Submit your final transcripts and test scores. Ask your school counselor to send your final high school transcript with your graduation date—this is required to start classes at Kent State. To earn credit for college courses or Advanced Placement (AP)/International Baccalaureate (IB) exams, send your final transcripts or test scores.
• Register for Selective Service. If you are an Ohio resident male over the age of 18, register for selective service.
• Review and complete mandatory immunizations. You can find more information on our webpage here.
• Review tuition payment options on the Financial, Billing and Enrollment Center website.
• Request your chosen name. We recognize that some students use a name other than their legal name to identify themselves. We recommend you do this before arriving on campus. You can do this by logging in to FlashLine and following the steps below:
  • Select "Student" in the left-hand column.
  • Under "Student," select "Resources."
  • Under "Resources," select "Requests and Authorizations."
  • The webpage will be displayed; select "Chosen Name Request."

After completing these steps, stay up to date with your personalized checklist in FlashLine and continue to check your personal and kent.edu email.

1. If you are living on campus, review residence hall move-in dates and details. 

2. Attend KSU Kickoff, an energetic, fun and unforgettable days-long welcome event leading up to the start of fall semester. Kickoff activities and events will familiarize you with the KSU community, faculty and staff, help you make new friends and prepare you for the fall semester.

Kent State Email Account

We will send important updates and next-step information via your Kent State email address. Be sure to check it regularly when you first get started and as you proceed through your academic career at Kent State! One of these important notifications will let you know that your Transfer Credit Evaluation has been completed.

Transfer Credit Evaluation

Early on you’ll receive an email notification in your kent.edu email notifying you that your Transfer Credit Evaluation is complete. The Transfer Credit Evaluation is a report of how your credits transferred from your previous school(s) and is provided to all transfer students. To access your report, log in to your FlashLine account and follow these steps:

1. Click on the "Student" category on the left, then expand the "Resources" section. Next, click on "Advising and GPS."
2. In the "Advising and GPS" section, click on "GPS Audit and Plan." A new window will open.
3. On the left side of the page, under the "GPS Audits" tab, click on "What-If."
4. Under the "What-If" blue bar, choose the following options in the corresponding drop-down boxes:                        
   1. Level: Undergraduate
   2. Degree: Transfer Articulation
   3. Catalog: Your catalog year
5. Above the "What-If" blue bar, click the "Process What-If" button.
6. Your transfer evaluation will open.
7. If you have trouble accessing your FlashLine account, call 330-672-HELP for assistance.

1. Post-undergraduate and non-degree students: Register for classes via the "Student" menu in FlashLine. Contact your academic advising office for advising and registration assistance.
2. Guest students: Register for classes via the "Student" menu in FlashLine. Enrollment and course registration information for guest students can be found at www.kent.edu/guest. If you need additional assistance, please send an email message to guest@kent.edu.

If you had in-progress coursework or have completed additional classes since your initial transcript was submitted, forward your final transcripts to the Admissions Office.

Take care of day-to-day living needs! Housing, parking and your Kent State ID are key daily essentials. Tackle these in any order you choose - but be certain you check these items off of your must-do list.

Kent State ID, FLASHcard!

• See current instructions on how to upload your photo and where to pick up your FLASHcard. 
• The FLASHcard is your Kent State University ID card and more. Your card will let you take materials out of the Kent State libraries, access services such as Student Recreation and Wellness Center and athletic events, and purchase goods and services both on and off campus. If you have a meal plan, you will use your FLASHcard to purchase meals in our dining halls.

Parking Permit

• To find out which parking permit is best for you, visit the parking services website.

You can apply to live in one of our 20+ residence halls and several Living-Learning Programs (programs where students with similar interests live together) beginning Oct. 15 for incoming spring students and Feb. 1 for incoming fall students in your applicant portal.

What is Transfer Kent State (TKS)?

Transfer Kent State (TKS) is your required orientation experience where you will meet with your academic advisor to register for classes, learn about campus resources and so much more. You can register for your preferred TKS date in your applicant portal.

Registration opens Oct. 15 for incoming spring students and Feb. 1 for incoming fall students. TKS is a required orientation program where you will meet with your academic advisor and schedule all your classes.

Placement Testing Before Attending TKS

You must complete any and all placement testing at least three days before attending TKS or before meeting your academic advisor. Information on "ALEKS," the mathematics placement assessment can be found here. Information on the foreign language placement assessment can be found here.

Confirm your attendance by paying the $95 Transfer Enrollment Fee online through your applicant portal.

You will be notified when you can view and accept decline or reduce your financial aid awards (including federal aid, state aid and university scholarships) in FlashLine.

• First-time federal loan borrowers: Sign the Master Promissory Note and complete entrance counseling. You must complete these to receive federal aid. During entrance counseling, you'll learn about direct loans, budgeting, repayment options and your rights as a borrower. In order to use your federal student aid for non-institutional charges, complete your Title IV authorization.
• Returning federal loan borrowers: Monitor federal loan borrowing, view loan history and find servicer information on StudentAid.gov. Report outside scholarships, awards and other tuition assistance you are bringing to Kent State on the Offer tab of your Financial Aid Dashboard in FlashLine.

There are a few more things you need to do before the semester starts:

• Submit your final transcripts and test scores. If you had in-progress coursework or have completed additional classes since your initial transcript was submitted, forward your final transcripts to the Admissions Office.
• Register for Selective Service. If you are an Ohio resident male over the age of 18, register for selective service.
• Review and complete mandatory immunizations. You can find more information on our webpage here.
• Get your Kent State ID, FLASHcard. View instructions here for uploading your photo and picking up your FLASHcard. Your FLASHcard provides access to your meal plan, libraries, the Student Recreation and Wellness Center and athletic events. It can also be used to make purchases on and off campus.
• Parking Permit To find out which parking permit is best for you, visit the parking services website.
• Request your chosen name. We recognize that some students use a name other than their legal name to identify themselves. We recommend you do this before arriving on campus. You can do this by logging in to FlashLine and following the steps below:
  • Select "Student" in the left-hand column.
  • Under "Student," select "Resources."
  • Under "Resources," select "Requests and Authorizations."
  • The webpage will be displayed; select "Chosen Name Request."
