ADN Traditional Track Program Admission

Admission Process

Apply to Kent State Geauga

  • Apply to www.kent.edu/geauga  
  • Select Nursing ADN (NRST) as major
  • Submit official transcripts from all schools attended (including paramedic and LPN programs)

Review and submit info session documents 

  • Submit Background check acknowledgement sheet
  • Submit ADN Info Session Data Sheet
  • Submit ADN Info Session Acknowledgement Sheet

Apply to the Nursing ADN program 

  • Application opens October 1st and closes February 1st  (traditional track) 
  • No application fee 
  • Must be accepted to Kent State University for admission consideration to the technical study sequence

Important Note:

You must submit both applications to be considered for admission to the Technical Study Sequence.

  • Application 2- Applying to Technical Study Sequence for the program

"C" Grade Requirement

  • A grade of ‘C’ (2.0) or higher is required for all courses required for the ADN program 
    • C- minus is not accepted and must be corrected before consideration to the Nursing Technical Study sequence 
  • If a C- or lower is earned BEFORE admission, applicant is not qualified and will be denied unless course has been corrected 
    • Students can reapply for the next admission year once course(s) are corrected 
  • If a C- or lower is earned AFTER admission, applicant is no longer qualified, and seat offer will be revoked

Non-Nursing Courses

  • Most can be completed before admission to the Nursing ADN Program Technical Study Sequence 
  • Each completed course will earn admission points, the more non-nursing coursework complete, the more competitive the applicant 
  • Transfer coursework may be accepted, depending on the course/school where completed 
  • Sciences completed at Kent State earn “bonus” points in admission prioritization scoring 
  • LPNs and Paramedics must have certain non-nursing courses completed for admission consideration

Non-Nursing Course List

Sciences

  • Anatomy and Physiology 1 (BSCI 11010 or 21010) 
  • Anatomy and Physiology 2 (BSCI 11020 or 21020) 
  • Chemistry experience (C grade or higher) in high school or college- this is needed for admission consideration into the program. 
  • Microbiology (BSCI 20021) 
  • Nutrition (NUTR 23511)

Non-Sciences

  • College Composition 1 (ENG 11011 or 11002) 
  • General Psychology (PSYC 11762) 
  • Kent Core Math Elective (Math 10040/10041- Statistics is recommended) 
  • Humanities or Fine Arts Kent Core (various options) 
  • First-year Experience (UC 10001)- only required if under the age of 21 at the time of admission to Kent State or transferred less than 30 credit hours 
  • Human Growth and Development (NURS 20950)- 5-year expiration, not required for LPN’s or Paramedics

*It is recommended to have most of this coursework complete prior to beginning the nursing coursework due to rigorous nature of nursing coursework

Previous Nursing School

  • Students who have failed out of one nursing program may apply for admission to the Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) Program. These students will not be eligible to receive substitute credit for nursing coursework. 
  • Students who have failed out of two or more nursing programs are not eligible for admission to the Associate Degree in Nursing sequence. 
    • Exceptions are at the discretion of the admissions committee 
  • Students who are currently enrolled and have passed all their nursing courses on the first attempt in an accredited and approved nursing program may request admission to the Associate Degree in Nursing sequence. These students are eligible to receive substitute credit for NRST 10011 only. 
    • Courses taken in other nursing programs do not automatically transfer into the ADN nursing sequence at Kent State University.

After-Admission Requirements

Health Requirements

  • Physical exam by health care provider 
  • Specified immunizations and titers 
  • Flu Shot required every year
  • Health Insurance Verification
  • Clinical partners may require record of COVID vaccination

Background Check/Drug Screen

  • Criminal Background Fingerprinting- BCI-I and FBI 
  • Must use specified vendor for background checks
  • Drug Screening 
  • If you have a background, it may affect our ability to place you in clinicals. If denied placement, you will be unable to progress in program

CPR

  • MUST be American Heart Association 
  • Red Cross not accepted
  • CPR-BLS for Healthcare provider 
  • CPR must be current for entire program

Admission Prioritization

Students offered available seats to Nursing ADN Program Technical Study Sequence based on prioritization score 

  • Points awarded for GPA 
  • Points awarded for completed coursework, science weighted the heaviest 
  • Points deducted from score for multiple attempts in science coursework 
  • Bonus points awarded for science courses completed at Kent State University 

Application Deadline - February 1

  • All requirements due by February 1st (traditional track) for priority admission consideration
    • late applicants may be reviewed at the discretion of the nursing department, pending seat availability
