What is ABET Accreditation, and Why is it Important?

ABET is an accreditation board for college and university programs in the disciplines of applied and natural science, computing, engineering and engineering technology at the associate, bachelor’s and master’s degree levels. With ABET accreditation, students, employers and the society we serve can be confident that our program meets the quality standards that produce graduates prepared to enter a global workforce.

The Kent State University at Tuscarawas Mechanical Engineering Technology (AAS) degree has been ABET accredited since 1974, our Electrical/Electronic Engineering Technology (AAS) degree since 1978 and our BS Engineering Technology degree since October 2017.

What this means is:

  • The Kent State University at Tuscarawas Engineering Technology degree has been recognized to meet the global standard for technical education in the engineering technology profession.
  • It enhances the employment opportunities of our graduates, as many multinational corporations require graduation from an accredited program.
  • It supports the ability of our BS Engineering Technology graduates to pursue a Professional Engineers license, as graduation from an ABET-accredited program is a minimum qualification.
  • It paves the way for our graduates to work globally, because ABET accreditation is recognized worldwide through international agreements.
