Program Basics

• It will take 2 years to complete once accepted into Technical Study Sequence (Traditional Track).
• Most students take 3 years due to prerequisite requirements.
• The program is offered on four KSU campuses: Ashtabula, East Liverpool, Tuscawaras, Geauga - Twinsburg Academic Center.
• Technical Study Sequence starts in the fall semester (traditional track) at Geauga-Twinsburg Academic Center 
• No waiting list 
• Ashtabula Campus and Tuscarawas Campus admits for the Fall and Spring semesters

Traditional Track Technical Study Sequence Track

• Appropriate for students who are not already an LPN or Paramedic 
• 2-year degree, most take 3 years due to prerequisite requirements 
• Day or Alternative track options

In-Program Schedule of Courses

• Each nursing course has 3 components: Lecture, Lab, and Clinical
• Program will require 2-4 days each week for availability
• Required non-nursing courses have various schedule options: day, evening, and online
• Typical clinical hours: 
  • Day clinical 7 a.m. - 3 p.m.
  • Alternative clinical 3 p.m. - 11 p.m.

Program options

Day Track

• Monday through Friday and potential for some Saturdays
• Must have availability 7 a.m. - 5 p.m.
• Possibility of an evening clinical in rare instances; students will be notified in advance.
• Must be adaptable and flexible

Alternative Track

• Monday through Friday afternoon/evening and potential for some Saturdays
• Must have availability 12 p.m. - 11 p.m.
• Possibility of a day clinical in rare instances; students will be notified in advance
• Saturday clinical may be 7 a.m. - 3 p.m. or 3 p.m. - 11 p.m.
• Must be adaptable and flexible

Admission Prerequisites

• Accepted to Kent State University by February 1 of the year you plan to begin
• Complete information session requirement and documents by February 1 of the year you plan to begin
• Apply to Nursing ADN program by February 1 of the year you plan to begin - application opens October 1 each year
• 2.7 cumulative GPA from the most recent school you have attended where at least 12 credits have been completed 
  • If you have ever attended Kent State University in the past but took fewer than 12 credit hours, your Kent GPA must be minimum 2.0 and the most recent school where 12 credits have been earned must at least 2.70. 
  • All transcripts from all schools attended are reviewed
• "C" grade or higher in all courses required for nursing program.
• "C" grade or better in biology and chemistry coursework completed in HS or College
• Competition of Math 10040/10041 or higher, or eligible to take based on placement exam
• Successful completion of all developmental courses prescribed through placement testing or evidence of mastery of the content
• All transcripts received from all schools attended, regardless of how old transcript is

**Meeting criteria does not guarantee acceptance to ADN Technical Study Sequence, seats are limited

In-Program Schedule of Courses

Nursing Lectures/Labs

• Held at the Twinsburg Academic Center in Twinsburg
• 75% minimum to pass each course
• Must demonstrate satisfactory performance of nursing lab skills
• Will have online requirements/ assignments
• Must complete all required course, clinical, and lab hours

Clinical Experiences

• Students are placed in clinical coursework by the nursing department. Students are notified via email with scheduling information for registration
• Students must be flexible and adaptable, clinical day or location is assigned to students.
• 1 instructor: 6-8 students average clinical group size (1:10 maximum)
• The curriculum requires all missed clinical hours to be made up, minute for minute. If in this situation, make up days may be different than standard clinical placement.
• If you are unsuccessful in clinical, you must repeat the entire course

Clinical Grading

Clinical has grading scale of NI/S/U

NI- Needs improvement, students have opportunity to correct skill/assignment for marking of U or S
S- Satisfactory, the skills/assignment was completed satisfactory
U- Unsatisfactory, the skill/assignment/attendance was not completed satisfactory.

Tattoos, Piercings and Smoking

• All visible tattoos that are interpreted as profane, offensive, or otherwise unprofessional in nature must be covered.
• In a clinical setting, jewelry should not interfere with student duties or patient care. One basic ring, one non-dangling necklace and one pair of stud earrings may be worn.
• Clear or Skin-colored plugs must be worn in visible gauged ears or piercings. One stud nose piercing is allowed.
• Kent State University is a non-smoking/non-tobacco university as are our clinical partners

Kaplan exams

• Kaplan exams will be given throughout the program

Math Medication

• Completed each semester
• Must complete 10 medication math questions in 20 minutes with 100% accuracy to demonstrate math competence
• Students who are unsuccessful in completing with 100% cannot progress in Technical Study Sequence

Admission Process

Apply to Kent State Geauga

• Apply to www.kent.edu/geauga  
• Select Nursing ADN (NRST) as major
• Submit official transcripts from all schools attended (including paramedic and LPN programs)

Review and submit info session documents 

• Submit Background check acknowledgement sheet
• Submit ADN Info Session Data Sheet
• Submit ADN Info Session Acknowledgement Sheet

Apply to the Nursing ADN program 

• Application opens October 1st and closes February 1st  (traditional track) 
• No application fee 
• Must be accepted to Kent State University for admission consideration to the technical study sequence

Important Note:

You must submit both applications to be considered for admission to the Technical Study Sequence.

"C" Grade Requirement

• A grade of ‘C’ (2.0) or higher is required for all courses required for the ADN program 
  • C- minus is not accepted and must be corrected before consideration to the Nursing Technical Study sequence 
• If a C- or lower is earned BEFORE admission, applicant is not qualified and will be denied unless course has been corrected 
  • Students can reapply for the next admission year once course(s) are corrected 
• If a C- or lower is earned AFTER admission, applicant is no longer qualified, and seat offer will be revoked

Non-Nursing Courses

• Most can be completed before admission to the Nursing ADN Program Technical Study Sequence 
• Each completed course will earn admission points, the more non-nursing coursework complete, the more competitive the applicant 
• Transfer coursework may be accepted, depending on the course/school where completed 
• Sciences completed at Kent State earn “bonus” points in admission prioritization scoring 
• LPNs and Paramedics must have certain non-nursing courses completed for admission consideration

Sciences

• Anatomy and Physiology 1 (BSCI 11010 or 21010) 
• Anatomy and Physiology 2 (BSCI 11020 or 21020) 
• Chemistry experience (C grade or higher) in high school or college- this is needed for admission consideration into the program. 
• Microbiology (BSCI 20021) 
• Nutrition (NUTR 23511)

Non-Sciences

• College Composition 1 (ENG 11011 or 11002) 
• General Psychology (PSYC 11762) 
• Kent Core Math Elective (Math 10040/10041- Statistics is recommended) 
• Humanities or Fine Arts Kent Core (various options) 
• First-year Experience (UC 10001)- only required if under the age of 21 at the time of admission to Kent State or transferred less than 30 credit hours 
• Human Growth and Development (NURS 20950)- 5-year expiration, not required for LPN’s or Paramedics

*It is recommended to have most of this coursework complete prior to beginning the nursing coursework due to rigorous nature of nursing coursework

Previous Nursing School

• Students who have failed out of one nursing program may apply for admission to the Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) Program. These students will not be eligible to receive substitute credit for nursing coursework. 
• Students who have failed out of two or more nursing programs are not eligible for admission to the Associate Degree in Nursing sequence. 
  • Exceptions are at the discretion of the admissions committee 
• Students who are currently enrolled and have passed all their nursing courses on the first attempt in an accredited and approved nursing program may request admission to the Associate Degree in Nursing sequence. These students are eligible to receive substitute credit for NRST 10011 only. 
  • Courses taken in other nursing programs do not automatically transfer into the ADN nursing sequence at Kent State University.

Health Requirements

• Physical exam by health care provider 
• Specified immunizations and titers 
• Flu Shot required every year
• Health Insurance Verification
• Clinical partners may require record of COVID vaccination

Background Check/Drug Screen

• Criminal Background Fingerprinting- BCI-I and FBI 
• Must use specified vendor for background checks
• Drug Screening 
• If you have a background, it may affect our ability to place you in clinicals. If denied placement, you will be unable to progress in program

CPR

• MUST be American Heart Association 
• Red Cross not accepted
• CPR-BLS for Healthcare provider 
• CPR must be current for entire program

Admission Prioritization

Students offered available seats to Nursing ADN Program Technical Study Sequence based on prioritization score 

• Points awarded for GPA 
• Points awarded for completed coursework, science weighted the heaviest 
• Points deducted from score for multiple attempts in science coursework 
• Bonus points awarded for science courses completed at Kent State University 

Application Deadline - February 1

• All requirements due by February 1st (traditional track) for priority admission consideration
  • late applicants may be reviewed at the discretion of the nursing department, pending seat availability

• Applied to ADN Program Technical Study Sequence via ADN Application
