First Step is Kent State University at Stark's first year advising and registration program. It's how new freshman students register for classes.
We realize that college is an exciting and challenging time for you and your family, so we've developed First Step to help you make a smooth transition to your life as a college student.
Who Attends First Step?
First Step is required for all new Kent State Stark freshmen age 20 and under.
What is Covered During First Step?
First Step is a day-long program (9:45 a.m. - 4 p.m.) that includes:
- meeting with an academic advisor
- registering for Fall 2015 classes
- receiving your Kent State FLASHcard ID
- a session on paying for college
- a session for parents/guardians
- complimentary lunch for students and parents/guardians (maximum 3)
You must plan your day accordingly so that you can attend First Step for its entire duration. First Step is considered an excused absence for high school seniors and participation letters for Guidance Offices can be provided.
When Does First Step Take Place?
First Step will be offered several times a month beginning in March for students admitted for Fall 2015.
How Do I Register for First Step?
Shortly after you've been admitted, you will receive an official invitation to First Step. Follow the instructions carefully in your invitation. Before you can attend First Step, you may be required to take placement assessments which will be detailed in your invitation letter.
No Campus Tours during First Step
Because we’re trying to keep the length of First Step to a minimum, there won’t be time for a campus tour. If you haven’t yet toured campus, you can schedule a guided tour for a different day at www.kent.edu/stark/campus-tours.
