New Student Orientation: Tuscarawas
New Student Orientation is required for all new first-year students (freshmen) because it is how you register for fall and spring classes at KSU Tuscarawas.
College can be an exciting and challenging time for you and your family, so we've developed this program to help you make a smooth transition to life as a college student.
WHO ATTENDS NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION?
All new first-year students (freshmen) who will begin at Kent State Tuscarawas in the fall and spring semesters. Transfer students are not required to attend and should make an individual advising appointment to register for classes. Transfer students should schedule an appointment through KSU Navigate.
WHAT IS COVERED DURING NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION?
- First semester course placement
- Meeting with an academic advisor
- Registering for Fall/Spring classes
- Receiving your Kent State FLASHcard ID
- Financial Aid / Scholarship Information
- Graduation Planning System (GPS) training
Plan your day accordingly so that you can attend for the entire duration. New Student Orientation is considered an excused absence for high school seniors and participation letters can be provided. New Student Orientation is offered several times per month beginning in March and/or November. Choose the earliest date available to get the best selection of classes.
HOW DO I REGISTER FOR NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION?
After you've been admitted, you will receive an email that contains a direct link to the registration page for New Student Orientation. Be sure to check the personal email address you provided on your application for admission! Before you attend New Student Orientation, you may be required to take the ALEKS online math placement assessment and/or Accuplacer Assessment.

PARKING
You are welcome to park in any Student / Visitor Lot. Parking passes are not required. There is no parking along University Drive.
PLAN TO ATTEND THE ENTIRE PROGRAM
Critical information pertaining to registration and campus resources will be provided. Plan your day accordingly so you can attend the entire program which is about three hours.
WHAT TO BRING WITH YOU TO NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION
- Photo ID so you can get your FLASHcard ID (driver's license or state-issued ID)
- Transcripts reflecting college credit earned through College Credit Plus (CCP) or Advanced Placement (AP)

WHY DO I HAVE TO TAKE THE ALEKS MATH PLACEMENT ASSESSMENT?
Math placement is an important step for new Kent State students since all students need to complete at least one college level math course to fulfill graduation requirements. The purpose of the placement process is to assess your current level of proficiency in math and place you into an appropriate course based on your competency and chosen major. An academic advisor will review your placement with you during New Student Orientation.
CAN I WAIT TO TAKE THE MATH PLACEMENT UNTIL AFTER I FINISH MY SENIOR YEAR OF HIGH SCHOOL?
We highly recommend that you DO NOT wait. Registration for fall classes begins in March while registration for spring classes begins in October and the earlier you attend New Student Orientation, the better selection of courses you’ll have.
I STARTED TAKING THE ALEKS MATH PLACEMENT BUT DIDN’T FINISH. HOW DO I GET BACK INTO ALEKS?
Your session probably timed out. Call the Kent State help desk at 330-672-0969 to have your session reset, and have your Kent State ID Number and Kent State Email ready.
I DON’T HAVE A COMPUTER AT HOME - OR - I DON’T WANT TO TAKE ALEKS AT HOME. CAN I TAKE IT AT KENT STATE TUSCARAWAS?
You can come to the Computer Cyber Cafe on the second floor of Founders Hall to take the ALEKS math placement Monday through Fridays from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.. We also have set specific days for students to take ALEKS on-campus with a proctor if you choose; to register for a scheduled assessment date visit: https://aedc.kent.edu/otrs/Default.aspx.
WHAT ABOUT THOSE OTHER PLACEMENT OPTIONS. DO I HAVE TO TAKE THEM?
Your reading and English placements are determined by your cumulative high school GPA, ACT test scores, or Accuplacer Assessment scores for adult students, and will be discussed with you during New Student Orientation. Math and Accuplacer (if required) are the only placement assessments required before attending. You are welcome to take the foreign language placement now if your major requires foreign language.

An academic advisor will explain all of your course placements at New Student Orientation.
