The vintage-inspired folk group Rosie & the Riveters will play the Performing Arts Center at Kent State University at Tuscarawas on Tues., April 3 at 7:30 p.m. as part of the new Come Hear Series.
Rosie & the Riveters’ unmistakable visual branding of red lipstick, pin curls and overtly feminine costuming may be deceiving, but this is not a throwback band. Their new album Ms. Behave embraces the feminist undertone of their moniker, Rosie the Riveter, in a way they hadn’t previously; one that allows them to shed their please-all attitudes, take a purposeful stance and dare be themselves. Listen closely and you’ll hear playfully defiant lyrics and confident talk-back harmonies. Every word, note and movement in their live show is done purposefully to empower and challenge.
“These fiercely talented and sassy women hail from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and play all original music,” says general manager David Mitchell. “Their message is one of equality and paints a portrait of a woman’s voice in a man’s world. They seek to empower women to be ambassadors for change within their own communities. In support of this vision, they invest 20 percent of their merchandise profits in women’s projects around the world through KIVA.org.”
