Students must be admitted in order to take Kent State University placement tests.

Most new students to Kent State University will be required to take the ALEKS placement test for mathematics. ALEKS is a powerful artificial intelligence-based (AI) assessment software product that zeroes in on the student's mathematical strengths and weaknesses, reports its findings, and then, if necessary, provides a learning module to improve the student's knowledge and skill.

Placement test results are used by academic advisors to determine proper course placement.

  • The ALEKS math placement test can be taken online from home through FlashLine.
  • ALEKS is administered at no charge.
  • ALEKS Math placement may take up to 90 minutes to complete.
  • For more information on ALEKS Math, log into FlashLine > Student > Resources > Placement Assessments.

Students have the opportunity to improve their mathematics placement score by taking an ALEKS reassessment.  Prior to reassessment, students are required to work in their ALEKS learning modules.  The learning modules allow you to practice your math skills at your own pace as you advance through different topics within your assessment pie chart.  Students are encouraged to achieve 80% mastery of their pie chart in order to have an excellent chance of improving their placement score on a reassessment.

ALEKS reassessment must be taken in a remote, proctored environment through ALEKS utilizing Respondus Lockdown-Monitor.

Please read the below for information about remote proctoring:

New students who have current ACT scores will be placed in reading and writing courses according to ACT reading and English subscores. New students without ACT scores will be placed in reading and writing courses based on high school GPA. In some cases, ACCUPLACER reading and writing placements will be administered remotely. Placement test results are used by academic advisors to determine proper course placement.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, in-person testing at the Academic Success Center has been suspended.

  • When in-person testing returns: Students will need to make appointments to take any placement tests by calling 330-244-3379 or emailing If you are taking ACCUPLACER and would like to take ALEKS Math on campus, you should allow yourself 3.5 hours. If you need additional time, the ACCUPLACER test can be taken in parts. It is best to complete ALEKS Math in a single sitting.
  • A photo ID is required to test.
