Why isn’t Kent State bringing its Florence students home? Why are other American universities suspending or canceling their programs?

  • We continue to work closely with local and national authorities to monitor the situation. No sources indicate a need for evacuation from Florence at this time. Italian officials have not instructed any schools or universities in Florence to suspend or cancel academic operations. We will continue to follow the guidelines set forth by Italian and U.S. agencies.
  • Every American university operating in Italy has different structures for academics and housing. With Kent State’s housing structure, the university can monitor the health and safety of its students closely. Kent State students reside in individual apartments, easily limiting contact with others if necessary. Whereas with other programs, students may reside with local Italian families or may be responsible in making their own housing arrangements, with less control in limiting exposure to others.
