Kent State Prof Keeps his Promise to the Victims of Hurricane Katrina

A decade ago this week, Andrew Curtis, Ph.D., geography professor in Kent State’s College of Arts and Sciences, promised the people of New Orleans that he would continue to return and document the recovery efforts following Hurricane Katrina.

Photo of Andrew CurtisAfter the hurricane, Curtis used specialized cameras, equipped with GPS, to help direct rescue helicopters and medical crews through the flooded and impassable areas. He also used the cameras to record and document the changing landscape from year-to-year.

Watch here as he shares some of the video with WEWS TV and WOIO TV to show how archiving the disaster is important to better learn how to save lives.

Curtis plans to return to New Orleans in the coming months.
