MEDIA ADVISORY: Kent State Alumni Volunteer Throughout Cleveland and Akron Areas This Saturday for University’s 10th Annual Alumni Day of Service

WHAT:
Each year, hundreds of Kent State University Golden Flashes gather across the globe to make a difference in their communities. Kent State alumni and friends have the opportunity to participate in the 10th annual Alumni Day of Service on Saturday, April 21.

WHERE AND WHEN:
Akron – Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank
9:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m.
350 Opportunity Pkwy., Akron, OH 44307
Volunteers will be volunteering alongside current Kent State students. Alumni will have hands-on experience sorting, inspecting, relabeling and repackaging donated food.

Akron – Akron Zoo
9 a.m.-noon
505 Euclid Ave., Akron, OH 44307
Volunteers will be participating in horticulture and general beautification projects at the zoo.

Akron – Capes of Courage for Kids
10 a.m.-1 p.m.
Zion Methodist Church, 565 N Cleveland Massillon Rd., Akron, OH 44333
Volunteers that participate in this part of the project will bring the finished capes back to Zion Methodist Church and drop them off.

Peninsula – Cuyahoga Valley National Park
10 a.m.-1:00 p.m.
1571 Boston Mills Road, Peninsula, OH 44264
Volunteers will be planting trees to reclaim an area of the park where the soil has been compacted.

Beachwood – The Gathering Place – East
9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
The Arnold & Sydell Miller Family Campus, 23300 Commerce Park, Beachwood, OH 44122
Volunteers will be provided with a tour and video about the Gathering Place. They will then clean and organize children’s play spaces, administrative areas, help with cleaning patio furniture and more.

Cleveland – Association of African American Cultural Gardens
9 a.m.-noon
916 Wheelock Rd., Cleveland, OH 44103
Volunteers will be clearing away leaves, branches, and clutter; cleaning garden and flower beds; hauling away and composting debris; and planting new flowers.

Cleveland – Cleveland Kids’ Book Bank
9:30 a.m.-noon
3635 Perkins Ave., Cleveland, OH 44114
Volunteers will be packing books by reading levels to prepare them for partners who will distribute to kids in need.

Cleveland – The LGBT Community Center of Greater Cleveland
10 a.m.-2 p.m.
6600 Detroit Ave., Cleveland, OH 44102
Volunteers will assist in cataloging the library of books, organizing materials and other resources for programs, and cleaning and preparing the community garden (weather permitting).

Cleveland – MedWish
9:30 a.m.-noon
1625 E. 31st St., Cleveland, OH 44114
Group volunteering sessions begin with a presentation and tour of the facility where the staff will explain volunteers’ important role in the recovery and redistribution of medical supplies. Alumni will then volunteer alongside current Kent State students to sort and pack up medical supplies that will support healthcare providers around the world.

Cleveland – The Red Line Greenway
8:30 a.m.-noon
RTA Rapid Station, West 25th Street, Cleveland, OH 
Volunteers will work on a number of projects that will help to beautify the Red Line Greenway.

Cleveland – Ronald McDonald House of Cleveland, Host – Black Alumni Chapter
9 a.m.-noon

Volunteers will be preparing breakfast and general housecleaning. Casual clothing encouraged.

Independence – Cornerstone of Hope
9 a.m.-noon
5905 Brecksville Rd., Independence, OH 44131
Volunteers will be helping with various activities around the center that may include cleaning, sorting, artwork, painting and landscaping.
