Kent State University has selected Lamar R. Hylton, Ph.D., to serve as interim vice president for student affairs, effective Sept. 16. Hylton has served as dean of students since coming to Kent State on June 1, 2017.

Lamar Hylton, Ph.D., will serve as Kent State University’s interim vice president for student affairs.

Hylton will lead Kent State’s Division of Student Affairs and institutional efforts aimed toward enhancing the engaged co-curricular lives of all Kent State students within the eight-campus system. The interim vice president for student affairs directs staff in a wide variety of student affairs functions and oversees strategic planning, assessment and activities designed to support the vision and mission of Kent State.

“Dr. Hylton has connected with our students on a personal and genuine level since his first day on campus,” Kent State President Todd Diacon said. “He brings deep experience from two of the nation’s top university systems – the University of Minnesota and the University of North Carolina. His leadership and experience with all facets of student affairs will help enhance our approach to being a ‘student-ready’ campus where the needs of our students are at the forefront of all that we do.”

Hylton said he is excited at the opportunity to serve in this new role.

“I love our students, staff and faculty, and the Kent State community is so welcoming and inclusive,” Hylton said. “Every student matters, and I look forward to serving our students’ needs, helping them to be academically successful and to persist to rewarding careers and meaningful lives.”

As interim vice president for student affairs, Hylton will oversee the Center for Adult and Veteran Services, Center for Student Involvement, Flash Technology Center, International Student Affairs, Kent State University Bookstores, Kent Student Center, Office of the Dean of Students, Office of Student Conduct, Recreational Services, Residence Services, Student Accessibility Services, Student Ombuds, University Dining Services and University Health Services. The interim vice president for student affairs reports directly to Diacon and is a cabinet-level position.

Prior to joining Kent State, Hylton served as the assistant vice provost for student affairs at the University of Minnesota for three years. He also served as the director of the Intercultural Center and Office of Multicultural Student Programs at the University of North Carolina – Asheville from 2011 to 2014.

A resident of Ravenna, Ohio, Hylton received a Bachelor of Arts in vocal music-performance from Morgan State University, Master of Education in college student personnel from Ohio University and his Ph.D. in higher education administration from Morgan State.
